Homeless stand out in emptier Penn Station amid virus stay-at-home orders

With the crowds gone, the remaining travelers making their way through the cavernous Midtown rail station say the forceful and sometimes unpleasant pleas from those in need have become harder to avoid.

“It’s like you’re swarmed,” said one man who didn’t want to be named but said he was cursed at and threatened by a man demanding cash.

“I’m sure they’re hurting just as much as anybody else is and not getting what they usually probably get,” said Sean Connors, 50, who travels to Penn from Long Island every day. “I can imagine. It’s frustrating on every level.”

For many homeless people in New York City, the subway is the safest place to sleep. Trains and stations provide shelter the streets do not. Last weekend, four men were brutally murdered, while they slept on the sidewalk.

On the E train, a man with white hair and torn clothing lay across the seats. Blinking in the fluorescent light of the car, he said he had lived on the subway for about five years.

“I screwed up my life,” he says. “I’m just sleeping on the train. That’s it.”
