i watch teevee, only 4 people will care about this rant.
SYTYCD is royally pissing me off this season. i liked the all-stars concept at first, because i've been irritated in the past how poor partners have dragged down good contestants, or good partners have shielded poor contestants. i had hoped that switching up every week and being paired with a garanteed awesome partner would show flaws quickly.
this hasn't happened though, because the judges are smoking crack. seriously. they've been so off base with what is good, especially related to "performance." they keep drooling on their monitors about connecting with your partner and being authentic and blahblah, but they're just wrong. this is compounded by the fact that all of the girls this year put together have about half of the technical ability of alex. the boys are SO STRONG this year, and the judges are overcompensating by dinging the guys on their emotion and connection and crap, and giving the girls a pass on their lagging technical skills by claiming that they nailed the emotion and commitment and whatevs. i mean. if they had cut robert over melinda or christina, i sware i would have stopped watching the show. melinda is a huge cheeseball fake horseyface, and i don't care what they said about her performance being hindered by the costume, of all things, or how beautiful her lines were supposed to be or whatever, because she looked like an absolute stick next to ade and has about the emotional depth of said stick. and i can't even go into those red pants from last night. good thing i wanted christina gone too. honestly she is almost as bad as that ridiculous pink haired "salsa" dancer from miami a few seasons ago who also didn't make it past the second week. look, if you don't have an anya, don't put in a ballroom girl just to have a ballroom girl. she needs to be wicked good to complete.
meanwhile, billy and alex and kent and robert were CRAZY GOOD. come on. i don't even understand how anyone can criticize alex on anything, frankly. billy did AWESOME at crump, better than anyone else has ever done on this show. and robert had a great tango. i think that the judges' comments hurt him in the votes. they're going overboard as though ignoring technical ability somehow evens the playing field. it is totally unnecessary, because the "best" most technical dancer never wins. they don't have to pull their punches because it does even out.
look at the evidence: last season, what's his name, russel! the crumper won. clearly he was not the most trained dancer, because he'd had NO FORMAL TRAINING. jakob and kathryn both beat the pants off him in terms of technique. and i know everybody likes janine, who won season 5, but she was hands down nowhere as good as brandon and kayla. but she won. and braces won season 4, and sabra won season 3, and neither of those kids were as good as will or danny, respectively.
so, what i'm saying, judges, is OWN that the girls aren't cutting it this year. and stop shoving jose in my face when i'm still pissed at you for not putting that amazing black dude anthony in the top 6. be honest and stop claiming that those with killer technique are lacking soul and those with poor technique are all emotionally fulfilling. i call bullshit.
