Things have an odd way of working out when you least expect them to.
Of course, they might not always unfurl in the manner you wish, or tumble neatly down the furrows you've so arduously fashioned. However unpredictability and the pain of past experience are what defines hope and expectation, along with the rare joy that is born from their occasional realization; each wound is thus a pivotal step towards the search for eventual happiness.
Focusing solely on transient pain makes it dwarf all other salient issues - one might might himself ready to tear away from the ties that bind, only to find regret with passing of the pain that previously justified that sundering. Thank you for reminding me of that.
And though it's a day late, happy anniversary!!
