Words and Phrases
Ok, I hung out with a bunch of friends yesterday, and we talked and talked. I still get immensely amused when I come upon new instances that confirm the fact that Korea and America use words and phrases differently. Like in Korea, we call someone who doesn't keep secrets well, or being all talk, that he has a "cheap mouth." (In a nicer version, a "light" mouth.) Amy loved that I think. Also, my friend talked about her roommate not picking up after herself and being irresponsible. I kept on saying, "Oh she's immature." But the other people didn't get that. They said you don't use the word "immature" in that sense. Now I didn't know that, too. Because in Korea, the word "mature" also implies a social maturity. So we call someone who only cares about himself and acts in a self-centered way, disregarding others, that he's "immature," that he "doesn't know something." Because we know that you can't function well in society if you keep behaving like that. And maturity implies learning that truth. But I guess here, the word "mature" has a much narrower connotation. Haha, it's funny. I guess that's why I didn't completely get the talk Becca and I had earlier. :)
