Urgh. Work sucks. That is all. Well, it's not all, because despite having about a million deadlines next week it's friday dammit, and I'm having an afternoon off! I have a whole (boring) weekend to do my accounting reading and my erts slides (it's called erts because it 'urts. Not really, but having told that joke to everyone here who will possibly listen to me I am now reduced to peddling it on the internet.) and my Photodiode research and other sundry nasty things so right now I shall laze about on the internet for a while, and then have an early dinner and go to Kempo cause I've never been on a friday before but apparently it's pretty good because there are way less people and we get to try out the massage-y/acupuncture-y part of it which sounds quite fun. Also if I stay here I know I'll eventually feel guilty for not doing any work this afternoon, so if I'm out I can't do anything about it!

1. Casablanca First one I thought of actually. It's just got so many classic famous (and oft misquoted!) lines that it had to be in there.
The letters of transit that motivate so many characters in the film did not exist in Vichy-controlled France - they are purely a plot device invented by the screenwriters. Playwright Joan Alison always expected somebody to challenge her about the letters, but nobody ever did.

2. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow Such an adorably bad film, I can (and have) watched it so many times and I just love it.
The villain, Dr. Totenkopf, is played by Sir Laurence Olivier, who died in 1989. Kerry Conran achieved this by using CGI-manipulated archive footage of Olivier. The use of Laurence Olivier's image was Jude Law's idea. Law said he had always wanted to work alongside the actor, so Kerry Conran "granted" his wish.

3. I Capture the Castle The book is absolutely beautiful, and I thought the adaptation was wonderfully done, and the casting perfect.
Rose sends Cassandra a bottle of what appears to be Penhaligon's Bluebell perfume for her 18th birthday. According to the Penhaligon's website, the Bluebell perfume was first manufactured in 1978, whereas the film takes place around the early 1940s.

4. A Knight's Tale SO funny, I love all the characters.
During the first award ceremony with William and Adhemar, Chaucer kisses Count Adhemar's herald. Twice. This was the response to a request from director Brian Helgeland to "surprise him", though he never specified how.

5. Singing in the Rain Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds, can anyone say original OTP?
In the "Would You" number, Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) is dubbing the voice of Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) because Lina's voice is shrill and screechy. However, it's not Reynolds who's really speaking, it's Jean Hagen herself, who actually had a beautiful deep, rich voice. So you have Jean Hagen dubbing Debbie Reynolds dubbing Jean Hagen. And when Debbie is supposedly dubbing Jean's singing of "Would You", the voice you hear singing actually belongs to Betty Noyes, who had a much richer singing voice than Debbie.

6. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid I saw this once with my dad, and it was just fantastic. I haven't wanted to rent it again in case it's not as good as I remember! It was made in 1982 as a film noir parody that contained scenes from old film noirs mixed up with the actual cast to make it look like they were having conversations.

Performers who appear in this film in footage from earlier classic movies include: Edward Arnold, Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Wally Brown, James Cagney, William Conrad, Jeff Corey, Joan Crawford , Bette Davis, Brian Donlevy, Kirk Douglas, Ava Gardner, Cary Grant, Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, Charles Laughton,Fred MacMurray, Charles McGraw, Ray Milland, Edmond O'Brien, Vincent Price, Barbara Stanwyck and Lana Turner.

7. Penny Princess I only just discovered that this film really exists! I thought I'd dremt it for ages, but it's another one that was so funny the first and only time I've seen it that I'm scared to rewatch it again in case it's really rubbish!
The Opening Title Card says: The producers wish to thank the citizens of Lampidorra for not speaking Lampidorran - thus saving the expense of English subtitles.

8. Chance I mainly bought this because at the time I was obsessed with Amber Benson who wrote, directed and starred in it. Also many other buffy actors... but it really is quite good, promise!
Emma Caulfield was originally cast to play the role of Heidi and has a scene where James Marsters character of Simon spills a drink of her in a restaurant. But the scene was accidentally taped over during a rush in filming and since Caulfield was unable to come back for a re-shoot, her character was replaced by Laura Boyd Rhodes and the restaurant scene was not re-shot.

9. Lord of the Rings Trilogy How could I leave this one out??
The last shot of principal photography was when the newly-crowned Aragorn bows to the four Hobbits. Although Viggo Mortensen did not need to be on set for that day, he nevertheless insisted on attending. He didn't have a crown (it wasn't necessary - he wasn't being filmed) so he fashioned one out of paper. With each successive take, the crown was becoming more ornate and sillier as crew members kept decorating it, so the four actors playing the Hobbits often had difficulty suppressing their giggles.

10. The Princess Bride So lovely, and so so funny. My only complaint is the complete lack of female role models, but then, that is sort of the point of it!
When Count Rugen hits Westley over the head, Cary Elwes told Christopher Guest to go ahead and hit him for real. Guest hit him hard enough to shut down production for a day while Elwes went to the hospital.

There are so many more films I could have put in this - Swiss Family Robinson, Piractes of the Cribbean, Ladyhawk, Casanova (david tennant version naturally!), Merlin, Brokeback Mountain... I'm really rubbish at picking favourites though, so I just went for the first ones I thought of!

Oh, and I tag anyone who wants to do it!
