Miscellaneous blogging - Dollhouse, music and more

I thought I'd try a bit of less focused posting here.

Ramblings below the The last several weeks of Dollhouse have been a very bittersweet experience. I've been really enjoying them, but also very pissed off that it's gotten cancelled, and the saddest thing about it is that I actually can't blame Fox too much for this one, since the ratings have been pretty poor, so I think I'll blame the general public who apparently aren't interested in a show with more than a little thought in it. I think the part that I've enjoyed the most is the layers of character and acting, none of the characters are simple and some of the acting, particularly that by Enver Gjokaj has been exquisite. Eliza is doing pretty well too, in part I think because she has a better handle on Echo as a character than she did on some of the other imprints, so her recent work where Echo is the primary character with overlays of various imprints has been very successful. Summer Glau was fun, and there have been lots of neat little bits with various other characters, I was particularly delighted by Enver playing Victor playing Topher which was hilarious. I'd like to hope that a miracle will happen here and we'll get more, but I'm rather doubtful about the odds on that. Sigh.

I've done some more work on my planned Buffy crossover with Liz Williams' The Poison Master, and I may actually be far enough along to start writing sometime this month. I need to do a reread of the book so I have a better handle on the setting which is what attracted me to the book in the first place and once I do that I need to do a bit more plotting and then I should be able to start writing.

I've also just started a reread of the Wheel of Time. I had a friend order the book club version of The Gathering Storm for me and I'm not sure if I'll have the patience to do a reread of the whole thing before I pick that up. Even if I don't I'm certainly going to reread at least selected bits first, particularly since it's been a while since my last serious reread (I think it may be as long as 6 or 7 years) and I was lazy when Knife of Dreams came out and read it first and then reread some pertinent bits from the most recent books. I particularly enjoyed rereading the entire Matt/Tuon romance in order, as it worked really well as an isolated thread. I'm also quite doubtful that I'll bother with most of the Perrin POVs after The Shadow Rising as his endless difficulties in finding some kind of accommodation between his cultural expectations and those of his wife gets tedious very quickly.

I've been enjoying several fanmixes lately and therefore thinking about doing mix work myself. Three recent mixes I wouldn't mind input on are based around Osualdo Golijou's Tenebrae for String Quartet, Neko Case's Ghostwiring, and Jane Siberry's The Walking (And Constantly) respectively. If you can think of a song or songs that would fit emotionally or thematically with any of the above I would be interested in hearing about it.
