While I wait for L&O:SVU to download, I must regale you with the best hour of episodic television I've seen since...well, "Fault", last season. Yes, folks - it's time for the PiecesofAlice review of...
The L&O:Criminal Intent Season 6 Premiere!
(Otherwise known as: "Blind Spot" or "The One Where Eames Got Kidnapped")
I'll take a leaf from
velocityofsound's recent CSI-recap-post-thing, and provide you kindly with visuals.
...not that this episode is about DVD borrowing, mind. It's all about MACGYVER!EAMES! But we'll get to that. Eames and Goren are on a case where someone is murdered and Madonna's daughter's father is called in for questioning. Goren, for something different, goes the unorthodox route and...
FEELS THE WRATH OF CAPTAIN BITCHPLEASE! My new favourite character, I should tell you. All curls! All bitch! All captain! He tells Eames to keep an eye on Goren, to which they respond in their usual fashion.
EAMES: "Captain wants me to keep an eye on you."
GOREN: "Lemme know if I can help with that."
BOTH: "LOLZ DOUCHE"
Martha Plimpton's dad arrives, who, luckily, is Goren's mentor and a criminal profiler, natch. He attacks hugs Goren, who goes all "NO TOUCHING" but responds in like.
As part of their investigation, Eames and Goren check out the video store where one of the victims worked. A Fat New Yorker yells, "OPEN ANOTHER REGISTER!", to which Eames shuts him down with her badge. A customer service assistant's dream, now a reality.
Some other stuff happens, then we are finally, for the first time, taken into one of the detective's environments. It's Eames', who seems to have hired the same decorator as Lisa Cuddy. Her bird is dead, too.
Goren hangs out with Captain BitchPlease who tells him to go upstairs and have a kip after ringing Eames who strangely hasn't turned up for work. He gets the above text message, which really should have read:
"LOLZ EMS & ME HNGN OUT LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL LUVVVV SEB"
ELEVATOR, STOP! says ROBOGOREN. (the best piece of television I've ever seen)
A man hunt of epic proportions begins, with the entire MCS descending on Eames' house and breaking her door. Captain BP, while giving Goren the "whatev" face, then allows Goren to hang out with his mentor, but ALAS Mentor seems to be of the crazy persuasion.
Goren runs around doing this face a lot, working with now-a-suspect Mentor to find Eames. Luckily, Eames is an industrious type girl and has been busy while he's been pulling the Internationally Recognised Face of Sad.
MacGyver!Eames! I wish they'd teach this sort of stuff in self-defense classes.
"SpiderEames, SpiderEames, does whatever...she can in high heels..." This woman pwnz my soul.
Then she's rescued! No thanks to Goren's sad facing. But then they 'ship out, and all is forgiven.
I won't give away the actual ending...
...but in the CI fandom, this is the equivalent of a moneyshot.
Then they all faded into Dick Wolf's executive producer title, and lived happily ever after.
Things of note:
♥ Eames has a new computer. This makes me so happy. It's got, like, a 17" monitor.
♥ The dialogue was wonderful. Really in tune, flowing, genuine. The bond between the detectives in face of Captain Bitch, Please is just fantastic already.
♥ All funny nicknames aside, I'm loving the new captain. I wasn't entirely convinced a Jamey Sheridan-less MCS room was a good MCS room, but Eric? You are my hero. Fic for days, fic for days.
♥ Martha Plimpton blew me away. Her subtle changes, shifts, rolls were just amazing. Give that girl an Emmy.
♥ VDO should go tieless all the time. Even with his (thankfully now) receeding paunch.
♥ The Captain/Eames/Goren scene in his office? Gold. VDO acting like a petulant child? Classic. KE being the world-weary voice of reason? Awesome.
♥ The introdution of Declan as a substitute dad for Goren was interesting, but not as interesting as the notion that he could have "gone either way". There are a few fics that dabble in that theory, but they are mostly Nicole-related, and not entirely Bobby-centric. A fic showing Declan's influence on Goren's development would be a welcome read. *eyes ficcers*
That said, this was easily one of the best episodes I've seen. The slight change in format wasn't all that obvious for the most part (Dear Editors: Jaunty jump-cuts and bad slow mo = NO.), and certainly not with finally entering into the emotions of the Goren/Eames dynamic and their personal lives. If they play it like this for the rest of the season, then I think 'shippers and hardcorers alike will be most happy.
And I hope the police will pay for a new boot and door for poor Eames.
