So it was a beautiful day outside, one that makes me want to be anywhere else but school. And that's where I am, sitting in a boring classroom as the teacher goes on and on about math or something...strange considering this is an English class. Oh well, doesn't matter anyway, I have lunch next period and I decided, and firmly stick with my decision, that I am going to cut out of the rest of the day and maybe hang out with Buffy or Willow...maybe even Tara, that would be a lot better than school.
The bell finally rang and I was off. We were allowed to leave school grounds this year, and believe me I took full advantage of that privilege, but I wouldn't tell Buffy that...nope, according to what she thinks, I stay in school all day everyday. But today I just didn't care, it was beautiful out and I was in a good mood and nothing could change that. Stopping at my locker before leaving the school I bumped into my friend Sara, she wanted to skip with me, but I told her today was going to be a family day. Slaying as been slow lately and everyone has been sleeping, and a well rested slayer house is a happy slayer house, so today was just going to be a scooby-rific day.
Since it was such a beautiful day I didn't mind walking home for once, I usually hate it but the sun was shining, birds were singing...hot guys were driving around in the convertibles, top down...definitely a good day. As I came up to my street I saw lights, flashing lights, ambulance lights. Upon looking closer I saw that the ambulance was at my house, I started running but the ambulance left before I got there. What the hell is going on.
Rushing up the front porch steps and through the front door, I saw the house was empty...out house was NEVER empty these days. "Hello?! Anyone here?!" I yelled to the empty house, it was creepy and I even got a chill. Deciding to see is someone was sleeping, maybe Willow, I ran up the stairs. Willow's door was closed, usually a good sign, she only had it closed when Tara was here...my face lit up at the thought of them back together. I knocked lightly on the door. "Willow? Are you home? If you are I say cover up 'cause I'm coming in." Laughing I opened the door and stopped dead in my tracks.
My heart stopped and dropped into the pit of my stomach, suddenly I felt very sick...what I saw no one should ever have to see. I stood there and stared, stared at the two forms on the floor, Tara was draped over Willow...both bleeding...not moving. I finally found the ability to use my legs again and I ran over to them, throwing myself on the floor, the tears beginning to flow from my terrified eyes. Looking at Willow's face, her skin so much paler, she had no color left in her, no life. I slowly reached out and touched her face, pulling back immediately when it felt cold.
"Oh...oh Willow...you...you can't be...you're ok." Scared to do it, but knowing I had to, I rolled Tara off of Willow and onto her back, she had blood at the corner of her mouth, and she looked just like she was sleeping, nothing more. Now I could see both their wounds, the way they matched up I could see they were together...the same bullet, reaching to wipe the blood from Tara's mouth I felt warmth. She was still warm... "Tara?" I spoke her name weakly, I had to keep my composure, as much as I wanted to just throw my self over their bodies and cry until I had nothing left, I couldn't. The tears were streaming, but I held back the sobs. They needed me.
Swallowing hard, fighting the, all to familiar, lump in my throat, I moved my hand to Tara's neck, my two fingers finding her pulse point... I let out a gasp. "Oh my god...Tara? Tara can you hear me?" Shaking her some, I had to be sure, I had to know. Leaning down, I lowered my head to her chest, my ear rested over her heart..."She's...she's still alive." I jumped up and ran to the phone by Willow's bed, quickly dialing 911.
"911 emergencies, how may I help you?"
Taking a deep breath, I knew if I acted all frantic that it would just take longer and I didn't know how much time I had, luckily it was a cordless phone. I spoke as I rushed into the bathroom, my voice was shaky. "Hi...my name is D-Dawn Summers and...and my friends were shot." That last word squeaked out of my mouth as I started losing the battle to not bust out crying. I grabbed a towel from the bathroom and rushed back to Tara, she was covered in blood and I had to stop it, so I put pressure on it. I told the lady on the phone my address and everything and she said some would be here shortly.
Keeping pressure on the hole in Tara's chest I found it harder and harder to keep from crying. I rocked slightly back and forth, taking deep breaths, they were shaky and I started crying really hard, trying to focus on Tara, keeping her alive, I couldn't help but just stare at Willow...her eyes were open but she saw nothing. "Please be ok...please be ok...please be ok..." I kept saying it over and over, my hands were covered in Tara's blood now and I didn't care. Finally unable to take that blank stare, I reached my hand to Willow's face and I with my two fingers I shut her eyes. Letting up on the towel for a second I leaned in and kissed Willow's forehead. "I...I love you Willow..." I was gasping for air now, I lost all composure and I never thought I would ever regain it.
Finally I heard the ambulance coming up the road and it screeched to a stop in the driveway. My hand was on the blood soaked towel and I was rocking more now, when I heard a voice.
"Hello?"
I tried to call out to him but it was barely a whisper, clearing my throat and taking a deep breath I called out. "U-up here! Hu-hurry!!" I hear the man call for the rest of his crew and they came rushing into Willow's room, back boards and medical kits, one of them men moved me away from Tara and I watched as the one man felt Willow's neck and shook his head, at that point I thought my tears were endless. They put a sheet over Willow and tended to Tara, they covered her wound and strapped her to the board. The one man spoke to his partner, low and quiet so I wouldn't hear, but I did.
"Call the coroner, and if we don't get this one out soon will have two black bags to fill.
"I-I'm coming with you...I can't leave her...Willow would want me...w-with her." The man nodded and we loaded into the ambulance, reaching out I held Tara's hand as they put the oxygen mask on her face and did frantic EMT things.
We finally get to the ER and they rush in, running with them to keep up I bump into someone leaving the waiting room. I stop as they tell me to stay here, I got strange looks, I was crying and I was covered in blood how couldn't I. I finally looked up at who I bumped into. "Xander?"
