See the Beauty

Today we had a New York Times photographer in the bakery, taking pictures for an upcoming story in T Magazine. Really cool. But the guys left shortly after I'd gotten there to spend much of the day shooting the bakery's owners, Chad and Liz. They eventually came back, near the end of my day, to shoot the two of them working in the bakery. Sadly, none of my work will be in the photo spread; I am destined to work in anonymity.

Even though they weren't around for most of my work day, I found myself actually noticing the beauty in the work I and my colleagues do every day. Most of the time I don't think about it, don't notice it. It's just work, usually repetitious, sometimes tedious. Today, though, I noticed the way the morning sunlight hit the table. I saw workmanlike shots of my coworkers finishing cakes, assembling tarts, mixing batters. I realized that we all go through life without even noticing the beauty that is around us all the time. When we are on vacation, we snap photos all the time because then we have the time to slow down enough to appreciate it all. But in our day to day lives, it's hard to see sometimes.
