Anniversary trip wrap-up

On Wednesday I had the day off, and Rob worked from home until noon, when we packed our things in the car and drove into the District for the night.

We played tourist in our own city, seeing the awesome Hopper exhibit at the NGA East Wing, then saw the Turner show in the West Wing. There was the most fantastic sunset over the Mall that seemed completely fitting after contemplating those swirling orange Turner seascapes, and we took lots of pictures of the pink light streaking behind the monument.

Dinner that night was with nrubenstein and turbogrrl at Belga Cafe, where we each had the beer special-- a four course meal with beer pairings (of our own choosing from the list), that allowed us to keep the cool beer-specific glasses. Nick is now enjoying the set. :)

Rob and I walked to back to our hotel, and stayed overnight in the city in order to get up before dawn to catch the train to New York. Train travel completely beats air travel, by the way; that is, if the distance allows. We plan to do this again when we go back in the spring for A&H's visit.

New York was amazing. The weather on Thanksgiving was warm enough for short sleeves, and the rest of the visit, while cold, was sunny and clear and absolutely beautiful. We clamored through the crowds to catch part of the Thanksgiving Day parade, peered from the top of the Empire State Building, saw the Rockettes put their ankles over their heads, drank in fantastic jazz from Dizzy Gillespie's bandmates, had a lot of sex (yes), ate truly delightful food, saw a lot of great art (and the backs of people's heads) and did our part to contribute to the economy.

We caught a late train back to DC last night, and I was asleep as soon as I hit the pillow.

We took a walk today discussing our trip and our history and our future, and felt the leaves crunching underfoot. A perfect afternoon.

So we're home, and after a nap, I'm being oh so lazy right now. All three cats are curled up together in extended naptime, and Rob's got the game on, and there's a canvas in the other room waiting for me.

So happy. Do I really have to go to work tomorrow?
