Tutorial 10 feat. RPattz

Aug 16, 2009 20:06

Program: Photoshop CS4
Translatable: Includes selective coloring, levels
Difficulty: Easy
Steps: 5
.PSD: Yes

1. Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen
- I find that if you sharpen your base before you crop it that your details remain in better quality and causes the icon to look sharper and crisper.

2. Crop your base to 100x100 pixels

3. Make a new layer and fill it with #FCEBD1 set to Softlight 80%
- This first layer really brightens up the image. Also, setting the color to a brown/tan hue makes the browns in the image really pop - which is what we are trying to achieve in this particular tutorial. *Tip: If your base is already really bright, set the layer to multiply instead, it will darken your base opposed to brightening it.

4. Make a new layer and fill it with #FFD9A3 set to Linear Burn 36%
- This layer continues to bring out the brownish hues in the image and darkens it a bit to loolk a bit more natural in the light department. *Tip: If you set the layer to saturation instead of Linear Burn, it will bring out the brownish hues and will not mess with the brightness of the image as much.

5. Make a new selective color layer
Reds: -7, +5, +23, -10
Yellows: +27, +9, -69, +27
- Selective coloring is always a must when I am making a new icon, it is a great way to bring out specific colors/hues in an image. These particular settings bring out the Reds more than anything and also gives definintion to your shadow.

6. Duplicate the previous Selective Color Layer
- This step changes your icon very slightly by bringing a little more 'natural' look to your base (especially if you are dealing with skin tones like I am).

7. Make a new Levels layer
0, 0.87, 285
- I personally think that this layer is the most important. Without a levels layer, your base can look really dull and drab, but by adding it, your image will brighten up, define shadows and will bring out the colors that you started with the selective color layers.

All Done!
Any comments and questions you would like to share feel free to do so! Of course, as with any tutorial that offers coloring advice, things will need to be altered and changed to fit the icon better as well as user-preferences.
