10. Damon Agrees to Erase Jeremy's Memory (1x07 Haunted)

watch it here

I had a difficult time choosing a scene for this spot since there are so many that I adore. But I ultimately went with this one because, for me, it is the real start of the ot3. It's heartbreaking that Elena has to decide to erase Jeremy's memory even though she hates the idea of messing with him that way/lying to him. But you know that she firmly and sincerely believes it is what's best for him. And you can see how much Stefan wants to be the one who can help her, but is unable to due to his lifesytle. Damon agreeing to compel Jeremy to forget shows that he does care to some extent and has some feelings of guilt over what happened to Vicki. It all comes together fantastically.

09. Anna Drinks Jeremy's Blood (1x16 There Goes the Neighborhood)

watch it here (fast forward to 1:29)

There are a variety of reasons why I love this scene. But if I'm being honest, the one that pops out most is the fact that I find it extremely sexual. Which obviously says something about me that we don't need to get into right now. But besides that, I love the way Malese plays Anna here. How it's obvious she's hungry for the blood, but how much she doesn't want to drink it at the same time, even though it's what Jeremy wants her to do. The moment when she looks at his hand and back up at him right before she starts is perfect and subtle and really gets to me on an emotional level.

08. "It's Not a Competition, Caroline." "Yeah, It Is." (1x01 Pilot)

watch it here

If I hadn't already been assured that the show gets awesome after the pilot, I may have continued watching based on this scene alone. There's something so simple and painful about it that I just love. Candice nails it. The quiet way she says, "yeah it is," kills me a little bit each time I watch it. And this scene gains so much more weight throughout the season as we see Caroline "try so hard" over and over, and still she appears to be some sort of Elena replacement for Bonnie and Matt, regardless of their intentions. You understand why she thinks this way, but she still keeps going and doesn't let it get her down too much. She's so strong and I love that about her. And this scene sets her up so perfectly; it's when I fell in love with Caroline.

07. "I Wish Life Was...Different." (1x08 162 Candles)

watch it here (fast forward to 2:44)

This scene is so lovely. It allows Matt and Caroline to make sense and is very realistic and subtle. I adore the way they can relate through feeling alone because of their family situations. Candice plays drunk/exhausted Caroline in such a quiet way that is perfect and gives everyone so much sympathy for her. And Zach does a fantastic job showing how the situation is a little awkward for Matt while still making it clear how much he feels for her. The movement is also very slow and deliberate and so true to life. My heart just grows ten sizes.

06. Damon Kisses Katherine, Thinking She's Elena (1x22 Founder's Day)

watch it here

This scene is wonderful in so many ways. Ian plays Damon in a way that allows his progression throughout the season, partly due to his feeling for Elena, to make complete sense. You can see why it has come to this and it doesn't feel like Damon is suddenly a different person. It's not at all forced. And Ian and Nina just have explosive chemistry. Also, the use of Bloodstream by Stateless sets the mood and contributes so much to how this scene feels when you watch it. And it gets even better when you realize that it's not Elena, but it's Katherine. It makes the finale even better than it already was, and it's a logical conclusion to the season and it's insane and awesome.

05. Vicki Dies (1x07 Haunted)

watch it here

This scene kills me (no pun intended). It's so high on the list because of the visceral reaction it caused when I first saw it. I knew Vicki was going to die, and while I liked her better than most people seem to since she was Maureen, I didn't expect to be so affected by her death. I bawled my eyes out when it happened, and my heart broke for every character it affected. The lighting and the way it's edited adds so much to it and really sets a dark, unsettling mood. I don't think any other death scene had as much impact from the way it was shot than this one. And this really made sense for her character, sad and messy and broken.

04. Damon and Elena Worry About Stefan (1x17 Let the Right One In)

watch it here

The raaaain! I love that it isn't completely a plot device throughout the episode. But anyway, this scene is so brilliant. Ian and Nina play it in such a way that you can see Damon and Elena skirting beyond friendship if you want, and there's a genius in how subtle that is (I am overusing subtle, I know). If you don't want to see it, you don't have to. And I adore how, ultimately, they're both so connected over their worry for Stefan in this moment, and the scene never loses sight of that. I adore how Damon is just as worried about Elena's safety as he is about Stefan's and how he understands what she's feeling.

03. "Please Take Me Home." (1x06 Lost Girls)

Oh man, this scene is just phenomenal. Kayla does such a fantastic job as Vicki here. The way she realizes what's happened and how she's going to die. Her voice breaking and simply wanting to go home. My heart cannot take it, you guys. You really feel for Vicki in this intense way; she's so vulnerable and broken and it hurts to see her life turn out this way. I love how Stefan wants to help her as best he can, and how comforting he is in a situation that's just impossible. He's trying to right Damon's wrong, but more than that, he's trying to fix the decision he made in 1864. It guts me in how beautiful and crushing it all is.

02. Bonnie Shows Elena Her Powers (1x08 162 Candles)

watch it here

This scene is the perfect example for what makes The Vampire Diaries different than your regular teen soap. It comes along at the perfect time, when Elena is depressed and everything is going badly, and it just picks everything up. It shows that life isn't terrible all the time. I love how Bonnie's powers are shown in such a happy, positive light and how purely excited Elena is about it. She is able to feel joy for her friend and forget about all of her problems for a moment. The friendship aspect is wonderful as is Nina's adorable facial expressions. There are happy tears when I watch it. Always.

01. Elena Stabs Stefan with Vervain (1x19 Miss Mystic Falls)

watch it here

Excuse the darkness of these caps. Because really, this scene is absolutely perfect. I just want to kiss Paul and Nina on the mouth for being so fantastic in it. I love how Stefan is so obviously disgusted with himself, how he wants to give up and is being eaten alive by guilt. Yet, his hunger and instincts are there, threatening to take control and he can't suppress them. And then Elena, who refuses to give up on him and sees the good guy he truly is tries to make him feel better. It's a wonderful juxtaposition. The moment when Stefan pushes Elena against the wall and then breaks down is phenomenal. How he never wanted to hurt anybody, never wanted to hurt or disappoint Elena. It breaks my heart, but it's so, so good. Just watch it.
