CHALLENGE 17 FIVES
5 Whedonverse Deaths that broke my heart (as only Joss can do).
Spoilers for Serenity, BtVS, Dollhouse, and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

Joss Whedon - creator of several of my favorite shows, and master of the heartbreaking surprise death plot-twist. I'm currently watching through Buffy for the first time (I know, I'm a bad Whedon fan -- just a little late to the party) and haven't quite gotten to the end yet, and I have a sneaking suspicion this list could be very different by the time I reach the end of season 7. I also very nearly included Miss Calendar because I pretty much bawled through a good portion of the second half of "Passion". Enough babble, lets get on with it!

(Disclaimer -- I haven't seen any of Angel yet, so any glaring omissions from there are due to that. No spoilers please, I'm diving into that after I finish Buffy! ;)

5. Penny, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog
By the time part 3 of Dr. Horrible came out, I was in love with it. I loved the concept, I loved NPH and Nathan Fillion, I loved the story. I don't know why I didn't see Penny's death coming, because it's a classic Whedon twist, but it caught me massively offguard. Sadness. =(

4. Bennett Halvorsen, Dollhouse
Bennett was a minor character on Dollhouse, only appearing in a few episodes, yet her interactions with Topher were such that I became rather fascinated rather quickly. When Whiskey/Claire suddenly blew her head off at the end of "Getting Closer" I literally yelled out in horror and startled my boyfriend. Topher's reaction after just starting something resembling a romance were just heartbreaking.

3. Tara Maclay, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
My view of this is a bit skewed, as I was spoiled and knew Tara would die sometime in late season 6 (the perils of watching a TV show nearly 10 years after it aired). However, I did not know the details, and the quick, brutal way in which Tara was killed, a mere episode after a touching reunion with Willow, still shocked me. =(

2. Topher Brink, Dollhouse
Going into the Dollhouse finale, I expected there to be a body count by the end of the episode. My only hope was that Topher would survive. When he told Adelle that someone had to be there to set off his device, determined to sacrifice himself -- well, I was misty-eyed for the rest of the episode. His last words -- "Huh." were just so perfectly Topher, but it was such a heartbreaking final half-hour for a character I had grown very, very attached to.

1. Hoban 'Wash' Washburne, Serenity
I still remember sitting in the theater the weekend Serenity was released, enjoying the movie, when that giant spike impaled Wash, seemingly out of nowhere, and shocked the hell out of me. I sat there trying to convince myself that there had to be a way he wasn't dead, until Zoe announced that "He ain't coming." And I was CRUSHED. It was WASH! I'm still mad at Joss for this one.
