CHALLENGE 17 FIVES
Top Five Steven Moffat Moments in Doctor Who
Spoilers for series 1-4 of New Who.
For this challenge, in anticipation of Steven Moffat's first series as Executive Producer of Doctor Who, I decided to look back on his four stories written so far for the show to find my favourite moments. It was VERY hard to narrow it down to five! In the end, it turned out that I've chosen moments reflecting aspects which are ever-present in his work - what I love about his writing. In other words: joy, optimism, romance, fear and of course, wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey~ness!
FIVE
The Doctor saves River
4x09, Forest of the Dead
River Song v/o: When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it will never end. But however hard you try, you can't run for ever. Everybody knows that everybody dies, and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark, if he ever, for one moment accepts it.
I love this part because River's voiceover is so true. It's beautiful and joyous because the Doctor never gives up, and we know he's still got so much to look forward too...plus, it's all a bit wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey, eh?
FOUR
The tape stops running
1x10, The Doctor Dances
The Doctor: I sent it to its room. This is its room!
It was close between this and the typewriter scene, but this one got it in the end for the chilling flickering sound of the end of the tape, as the tension racks up.
THREE
Why her?
2x04, The Girl in the Fireplace
Rose: Why her? Why did they think they could fix the ship with the head of Madame de Pompadour?
The Doctor: We'll probably never know.
Reinette v/o: My Dear Doctor. The path has never seemed more slow, and yet I fear I am nearing its end. Reason tells me that you and I are unlikely to meet again. But I think I shall not listen to reason. I have seen the world inside your head, and know that all things are possible. Hurry though, my love. My days grow shorter now, and I am so very weak. God speed, my lonely angel.
An achingly sad ending to the possibly the most romantic episode ever, but it's the final reveal of the ship's hull that ties the episode up so brilliantly...
TWO
Easter Egg conversation
3x10, Blink
The Doctor: People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff.
Sally: Yeah, I've seen this bit before. You said that sentence got away from you.
The Doctor: It got away from me, yeah.
Sally: Next thing you're going to say is, "Well, I can hear you".
The Doctor: Well, I can hear you.
Oh, Blink. Widely recognised as one of the best things EVER on television, starring the now-Academy Award Nominee Carey Mulligan, the twisty plot was no less than perfection. Scenes like this have become the stuff of legends. But it's not quite number 1...
ONE
Everybody lives
1x10, The Doctor Dances
The Doctor: You want moves, Rose? I'll give you moves.
The Doctor: Everybody lives, Rose. Just this once. Everybody lives!
Moving and beautiful, it's the expression of elation on the Doctor's face that I really love. The true joy is later echoed in Forest of the Dead (see #5)...but you wouldn't find it in any other show.
