Complaints, and Hopes

Litter, it's everywhere. Much like the trash excuses for people who toss it there. Complacency, many Americans have stopped caring about keeping this country beautiful. Granted it's been the case for decades at this point. We keep hurdling to ecological disaster, and nothing gets done. No one seems to care anyway. But then again only now for the first time in a long time, do we care about where our money's going.

Inflation and the recent recession have led some Americans to reevaluate their lives and spending. Though, again, most couldn't give a shit. We live in a place where food is plentiful, there is vibrant culture, clean drinking water, public school systems, you name it, we got it. But humans always find a way to complain about things. I found a way to complain about the complacent. See how that works?

I'm not the one throwing trash into the streets or even onto the floor of my own home, seriously some people just live in their own trash. I'm making my complaints productively. You either laugh, or you cry, or you blog. I figure this is better than the former options. We are Americans, we're special, we're examples to the world. The city on the hill, a light unto the nations.

And yet we've let ourselves go. From the guy wearing his dirty pajamas shopping at the grocery at 6PM on a weekday to the people who dump all the garbage from the windows of their moving cars. Some have lost the pride that comes with being an American and it shows. People who don't vote, yet complain every chance they get about political races when they never cast a ballot in the first place.

People who say they're always being kept down but do nothing to stand up for themselves. People who complain about being broke yet have not even searched for a job, even though they are of relatively sound mind and body. Every job opportunity is a crapshoot, sure. Not many workers get benefits or bonuses, or decent pay, but God damn it some income is better than none.

Sad part is, the true believers have to work harder in understaffed service job hell. I'm a hard working, honest man. I try to do my best day in and day out, at home and at work. Just like all of us Americans, who give a shit, can do. We believe that this country can still get back on track. Question being, how many of us want it? And how hard are we going to work to make it a better place for all Americans?

This will sound corny, but everyday I think of the Pledge of Allegiance at least once. I think about it and what its message carries.

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

It was one thing to recite this in school every Morning, but another to appreciate its message now. I believe in this country, I believe in these values. I wish everyone could get off of their moral high horses, drop their biases, learn some manners, and come together to make our country better than it has ever been.
