Go Gently

Dylan Thomas wrote,
“Rage, rage against the dying of the light”
I don’t like that quote
Death is like day being followed by night

Death is natural
Like every breath, it’s a part living
Why moan and howl
As if life has been some great misgiving?

You know we all die
Time is no secret under lock and key
Who knows how or why?
Life has its ending for everybody

So why all the rage?
It’s not as if life was being unfair
We’re in the same cage
And all that complaining gets you nowhere

So why make the world
Anything less than a pleasant place?
Keep a smile unfurled
And wear it with pride across your face

Do not rage against
The coming of the slowly setting sun
So that all your friends
Will speak kindly of you once you have gone

Go gently instead
Reserve your dignity and show some grace
And hold up your head
Meet your maker with a slow, steady pace
