Happy New Year!

And happy ninth anniversary to my LiveJournal.

xkcd has a comic today that matches pretty well my concern about making New Year's Resolutions. One way to escape the problem is to not make New Year's Resolutions at all. But, it is easy to succeed at Old Year's Resolutions, which I tried for the first time last year. They're simply a list of things that I resolve to have already done in the past year. In the year 2012, I resolve to have already:
  • Gone from New Years to New Years without posting on LiveJournal again
  • Completed the first year program in grad school
  • Not gone on Reddit after July 21 (with a couple specific exceptions) (It can still be a year-long resolution if it only applies to part of the year, right? It's like not wearing white after Labor Day)
  • Taught for two Splashes - Northwestern's and UChicago's.
  • Found an advisor for my topic exam
  • TAed a class for the first time - problem sessions, office hours, and grading - and I enjoyed it
  • Visited with a number of relatives, some for the first time in a long time
Looking forward to the New Year!

And, once again, Go Badgers! Third time's a charm!
