New words
Our crossword puzzle recently had "Mark on the skin" and so far we had NE_US. Looking at my word list, we saw NEXUS (obviously not it) and NEGUS and NEVUS.
Hmmm. I don't recognize either of those words. American Heritage has this to say about negus.
ne·gus (nē'gəs)
n. A beverage of wine, hot water, lemon juice, sugar, and nutmeg.
[After Francis Negus (died 1732), English army officer.]
I think I'd like to try that.
Nevus, as you may now have guessed, is the birthmark, congenital mole answer.
