Fandom.

The realm of nightmare.

...hell, you mean there's a difference?

ETA: I've figured out a sort of rule for fandom. Whenever there's a Cool Race or Exception, it's the thing the fans will fantisize (npi) themselves as. LotR you have everyone wanting to be an Elf. Avatar you've got multi-benders and Avatars out the thing, not to mention a surplus of Firebenders. Trigun you've got Plant-people. Star Wars I haven't ventured into, but I'm certain there are people writing themselves in as Young Jedi.

It's interesting that people view themselves in such a manner. I had a minor acquaintance once who used to play Dungeons and Dragons; after I readup on all the characters and stuff he said "now guess what I play as!" I looked at him: six-foot something, not the best physical shape, not exactly a strategist, either. "Dwarf ... uh, warrior? Or maybe an Orc."

Guy looked at me with all seriousness. "I'm an Elven Rogue."

And that's it. I think what's done is that defects are imagined away, and that people view themselves the way they want to be idolized, not the way that reflects them. "Aye, madame, it is common," because it does seem to be a phase of thought that people go through. It's whether they mature out of it that determines them.
