The Graverobber on Ghost Street - [chapter one]

Oct 09, 2012 02:22

I tried avoiding it. I tried leaving the location unspecified. I tried tossing in things to show a different type of setting. But I can no longer hide from the fact that:

I am writing a story set in post-apocalyptic Harbin.

Yes. Yes I am. Something ("the changes") has happened to the world, and infrastructures are le gone, along with most of the human population. Instead, we have a huge and sudden increase in weird and sentient animals. Humans scavenge in the dead cities to survive, and band together against the elements and the animals, trying to rebuild what they can and keep themselves alive. This is not the capital, not somewhere easy to deal with, easy to get to. This is the Ice City, where the river freezes over in November and weird animals wander the streets, calling to anything that can hear them to come and be eaten.

Enter Nitesh, a graverobber - a guy who goes out into the city and loots dead houses of whatever is humanly useable - and a generally decent young man. Nitesh is no great shakes at much other than graverobbing, and his place in the community is a tenuous one. He has been contracted by two ???s to case a certain residential, promised to contain more gold than he could dream of. But the gold is the least of what he finds there.

Chapter One of The Graverobber on Ghost Street available on szavasvar for the next couple days; after that it goes under friends-lock, and you'll have to join the comm to read it.
