i'm just a girl by no doubt

Don't you think I know  //  Exactly where I stand  //  This world is forcing me  //  To hold your hand  //  'Cause I'm just a girl, little ol' me  //  Don't let me out of your sight  //  I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite  //  So don't let me have any rights  //  Oh... I've had it up to here!  //  The moment that I step outside  //  So many reasons  //  For me to run and hide  //  I can't do the little things  //  I hold so dear  //  'Cause it's all those little things  //  That I fear  //  'Cause I'm just a girl  //  I'd rather not be  //  'Cause they won't let me drive  //  Late at night  //  I'm just a girl  //  Guess I'm some kind of freak

Claire knew that she was irritating the hell out of him; she could see it from the look in his eyes and the tension in his shoulders.  Even the way that he gripped the steering wheel told her that he was close to snapping but he was holding himself back.  She still didn't know how he did it all the time, just traveled all over the place and never seemed to stop.  She was tired of passenger seat, and the backseat, and the driver seat...in truth, she was sick of the whole damn car.  It wasn't comfortable to her anymore.

In fact, she was pretty much to the point of refusing to get back into it.

She stood near it, her arms crossed as she waited for him to be done whatever he was doing in the store.  She watched him stalk out of the small building and she half wondered if he had left a body behind.  Had he killed the attendant out of frustration because they were both starting to drive each other to the end of their patience?  She knew that she was fairly close to not being able to stand him anymore at the moment.

"Come on."  He snapped irritably at her, motioning at her to get into the car.

Her skin crawled.  "No."

He stopped at the abrupt answer, blinking over at her before giving a little frown.  "Get in the car."  He opened the back door and tossed the bag of stuff onto the seat.

"No."  She shook her head strongly.

She could see his jaw tightening, a tiny muscle tic signalling he was doing his best not to hurt her at the moment.  "Claire."  The use of her name was fair warning for the both of them.  "Get. In. The. Car."

"Let me drive."  As though that would solve all the tension between them at the moment.

"No."  He echoed her earlier sentiments.

"Then I'm not getting in the car."  She explained it coolly, crossing her arms as she stared him down.  This was one of those times when he wished that she could still feel pain and that she would show at least an ounce of fear around him.  He preferred the fear at times.

Sylar stalked around the car, moving quicker than she had anticipated and so she had no time to pull back before he caught her arm in a punishing grip and propelled her towards the car.  "Get in!"  His voice had barely risen in volume but she still felt it slap against her as she slapped a hand against the window to stop herself from hitting the car to hard.

"No!"  She twisted towards him angrily.  "I'm sick of being in the car!  I'm sick of running around, I'm sick of hotel rooms and I'm sick of you pushing me around."  She had gone her entire life with people making decisions for her, trying to push her one way or another.  She had spent her entire life feeling like she wasn't making her own life decisions but she had thought it was changing.  She could see now that it wasn't.  Yes, she was sleeping with him because she had chosen to but he still pushed her around.  He was as bad as the rest of them.

"Fine."  He spat, wrenching on her arm again but this time he threw her back.  He probably even added a tiny burst of his telekinesis, throwing her off balance as he let go of her and watched, with grim satisfaction, as she landed on her ass with a tiny grunt.

It should have hurt but it didn't.  It was still annoying though, anger sparking in her eyes as she looked up at him through a mess of blonde curls.  She watched as he stalked around the car to the driver's side, climbing in behind the steering wheel before slamming the door and starting the engine.  She had to turn, to twist away from the spray of rocks as he pushed the pedal down and tore away from her.  Gasping through the cloud of dust and pebbles, she looked back and watched with widening eyes as he drove away.

"That son of a..."  She trailed off into a few curses, pushing to her feet as she pushed some hair back from her face and watched to see if he would come back.  After about five minutes, she realized that he wasn't going to.  That bastard had actually driven away and left her behind!

Drawing in a shaky breath, she tried to calm her furious heart rate as she curled her hands into tight fists and felt her nails biting into her palms.  Cursing his name still, she started forward, walking quickly as she started after the way that he had sped off.  She had no idea where he was going but she was sure that she had seen a small town on the map that he had her studying all morning.  If she could get there, maybe she could somehow get a hotel room and then she could figure out what to do next.  Maybe she could try calling her mom and see if Sandra would send her money.  Or maybe she would just see if she could get a job, enough for a bus ticket to get to another town where maybe she would just start a new life.

She was good at that.

But she didn't have to worry because about a half an hour later, she spotted the car.  He had pulled over to the side of the road and she could see him leaning against the side of the car, still looking irritated as he kept his arms crossed over his chest even while watching her approach.  "Feel calmer?"  He finally asked when she got close enough to hear him.

"You left me!"  She was incredulous all while knowing that she shouldn't be surprised.

"You were being a brat."  He explained calmly to her and she swore she could almost see him smiling.  When she tried to swing at him, he caught her wrist and twisted to pin her between him and the car.  He bent her backwards then, putting a strain to her middle back as his hips pressed against hers and he pushed a hand against her collarbone to pin her torso to the hood.

"Let me go."  She grunted, struggling a little.  She tried lifting her leg and he took advantage of it, pressing further between her legs even while pushing her down again.  Hard enough that her head bounced off the hood, stunning her for a second as she saw stars dancing in front of her eyes.

"Are you going to stop?"  He murmured, watching her closely.

"Probably not."  She muttered at him, her annoyance still showing through though it didn't have the same strength as before.

"It's not like I enjoy it either."  He explained to her, his hand moving from her chest to brush his fingers slowly against her hair.  "We'll stop somewhere again, soon, but we just need to get a bit further."

She felt the fight draining out of her as she gave a little sigh, watching his features.  "Can I drive?"

He chuckled, amused.  "No."  He dropped his head down, pressing a kiss to her mouth to distract her from getting too mad about it.

"Fine."  She muttered against his mouth.  "But you'll need to sleep eventually."  Maybe then he would let her drive but knowing him, he would just get them a motel room or else make them both sleep.  He didn't seem to like giving up the control of driving to anyone.

He gave another huff, sounding like a laugh, before kissing her again and then pulling back.  He helped her straighten, pushing her hair back from her face with a gentle brush of his fingers before moving around to climb in the driver's side.  She joined him by climbing into the passenger side, wriggling a bit as she found the right groove to settle in before shutting the door.  Sylar turned a little, reaching into the back seat to pull out a small jug of chocolate milk to hand over to her.

She had to smile a little as she opened it up, taking a small sip to ease the dryness in her throat before closing it up and setting it aside.  She waited as he started to drive again, and then watched as he dropped his hand to the seat between them, the palm facing upwards and the fingers spreading in silent invitation.  The smile on her mouth grew as she reached her own hand down, pressing her palm to his while linking their fingers.

Maybe she could deal with the driving thing a little bit longer.
