[ptm] johnny cash - love's been good to me

Mar 21, 2009 12:26

I have been a rover
I have walked alone
Hiked a hundred highways
Never found a home
Still in all I'm happy
The reason is, you see
Once in a while along the way
Love's been good to me

====================

Was it worth it?

The words snake through his mind and heart at May’s changing table, a last effort by The Darkness to understand its enemy. It’s a cheap shot…it’s amusing.

Amusing, but effective.

It’s a good stab from Doubt’s corner, but Tommy’s ready for it. He doesn’t even pause as he finishes changing May’s diaper, picks her up and kisses her cheek as he fights his last battle for a while. It’s not an easy fight, but it is a quick one.

Was it worth it? The pain, the loneliness…the sleepless nights, raising a daughter you never even wanted all by yourself?

“I need you to know that I love you and the love is so damn deep and so strong that even in my next life, I'm sure I'll feel it.”

Every knot in his gut, every aching bone and muscle in his body resonates with the last words she ever put to his consciousness…that stupid letter she had the gall to write him. How she ever thought it would help, he’ll never fathom, because even now the words have no meaning and hold no comfort.

But he can still see the ring of that coffee stain intersecting the word ‘love.’ Twice. And in his mind’s eye, he can see her drinking that coffee, smiling as she writes…he can walk up to her and kiss the delicate slope of her neck…

He manages to lay May down in her crib before it hits him and she’s there. The scent of her skin and hair fill his lungs, his skin flushes with the added heat of hers, and the press of her energy is mere inches away. She’s nowhere to be seen but she’s there, right there, touching him…

He falls to his knees in the middle of the nursery and lifts a hand, pressing it to the place on the back of his neck where he’s sure he can feel her touching him. His heart is slamming against his ribs and his eyes are full of tears, remembering…

I love you.

He doesn’t know where it comes from, him or her, but it fills him to the point of pain as the hole fills for a moment…the losses he’s felt, the losses he’s known. The unwitting weapon, the meek and tender wife, the gloriously strong lover that gave him the miracle cooing just a few feet away.

…then she was gone again. He was alone.

Collapsing onto his stomach, Tommy rolled on his back to stare up at the white stucco ceiling, struggling to catch his breath and fight not against The Darkness, but the sudden hole he felt in his heart.

It hurt like hell…and he felt himself smiling.

Yeah…it’s worth it. I warned you not to fuck with me. Get out.

He lay there for a few minutes in the stillness, the quiet of the room before he struggled to his feet and went back to May’s crib, picking her up and smiling as she touched his cheek when he gathered her close.

“Worth every second.” He whispered, leaning in to kiss his daughter’s cheek and catch a lingering trace of Zee’s energy living on inside of her.
