It's a beautiful lie
It's the perfect denial
Such a beautiful lie to believe in
So beautiful, beautiful it makes me
"A Beautiful Lie" -30 Seconds to Mars
He'd been living a lie his whole life. From the time he was eight, Sam had always believed his father was a traveling business man. It explained why he always left Dean and him with family, or alone in motels, but what he was a man of business for, Sam didn't know. When Dean finally revealed that their father was a hunter--well, Dean said superhero--Sam's views of his father hadn't changed, but he had become angrier about his dad's lying.
Growing up, Sam had to constantly lie to the people he met along the way. Make up some logical reason why they were in town and what their father did for a living. And if he did tell the truth, no one believed him. Yeah, dad was a mechanic; but that was a long time ago. Now he was a hunter--who hunted the not so wild animals you'd expect someone to hunt with that title--who traveled into town with his motherless kids and saved the citizens from a monster hiding underneath the bed like some cowboy.
Adulthood came and Sam high tailed out of the family's business. But, once again, he saw himself lying to friends about his past. They knew he had issues with his family, but that’s all. Details he left in the dark and divulging into their secrets wasn't his thing. He wouldn't even tell Jessica, the woman he planned on marrying, despite how much she wanted to meet them.
In that sense, he was like his mother, who too had tried to run away from her past and met up with it again in a fatal outcome. They were living a beautiful lie and Sam was tired of this game.
