I want to live my life
The way you said I would
With courage as my light
Fighting for what's right
Like you made me believe I could
[An unsent letter to Stanley Davis sitting on the computer desk]
Dad,
I found this song. I get that songs make me emotional. I can't listen to Cat's Cradle anymore and that's partly your fault, partly my fault. But, I found a song and it sparked something and now I actually have to write that spark down. You were never like the father in this song. For twelve years you encouraged me and you were proud of me. But you didn't lead by example and you didn't encourage me to do things that were actually good for me.
You find out what I am and you just leave. It's what you do, anyway. That makes twice now. You left once, made me believe you were coming back and then left again and I can't help but think that I'm a part of your leaving. The second time. I came out. I thought I had come out in a funny or light way and yet, it was nothing like that.
You asked if I was chasin' the ladies and I said I was chasing the mens' and it just wasn't funny. But to me I was being funny, I wasn't bringing down - well, everything.
Except I did.
And I can't help but think I'm partly responsible for yours and mom's marriage collapsing.
There was really no point to this. Imagine that.
