There were some things that Nick should have learned to anticipate during his time on the island.

This? This was not one of them.

He'd woken up as a kid, he'd woken up to Greg turned into a girl, he'd woken up curled up to a Karen that wasn't Karen at all.

But somehow he didn't actually thing that he'd wake up in an unfamiliar hut, with an ( Read more... )

Part of me is still wondering why the hell Nick didn't just tell me right off, y'know, spare us the whole homoerotic drama. 'Cos, damn, if he really is carrying a torch for me, that's a problem. Not a problem like we're gonna stop being friends, 'cos that's just bullshit right there, but a problem like I don't swing that way, not even for Nicky.

Most of me is doing the CSI thing, cooling down, laying back, processing the evidence now that the first shock is past. Now, all I've got in the way of evidence is the lady's word, the fact she broke off a kiss with me in a freak-out, the fact she knows who Karen is and apparently isn't worried about me fact-checking the stories. It's a whole lotta not a helluva lot, but Nick, man, he stood by me both times I got hauled in, and even if I weren't convinced, I'd be standing by him.

It's me and Nick, though, so it ain't gonna be like I love you, man. Naw. He finishes talking and I'm staring at him like he just sprouted a set of stupid. I do a quick pat down like I'm looking for something, shake my head and say, "Damn. Nicky have you seen my 9 inch phoenix feather core black cypress wand, 'cos I know I just had it."

Then I give him a look. If you weren't in a woman's body I would clock your ass. "I know I'm not Dumbledore, man, but what do you want to do, sit around and hope LOST island decides to play nice soon? Damn right this place is fucked the hell up, which is why we gotta find your body and Lacey's mind, stat. Prob'ly oughtta talk to Karen, Cath, Sara and Gris yesterday, in case they run into either of you."

But my boy's (girl's? damn, that's weird) losing it, so I squeeze his shoulder, in a manly reassuring way (as much as I can without bruising Lacey's body) even though I could use a drink or a wall to put my fist through.

[ la la la use your imagination la la la ]

Nick couldn't help it then, he laughed out loud, because if this wasn't just the most damn absurd thing to ever happen to him, he didn't really know what else should possibly qualify. The laugh was different, though: strange, and not him at all. It was delicate and feminine and, quite frankly, a little scary.

Eventually, he managed to calm himself. It wouldn't do to have Warrick think he was losing his mind, too. "I was on my way over to Karen's... whoever woke up as me, well, I'm sure she dealt with it just fine." That was, if Karen was even Karen. If she'd switched out again, well, that was a bigger problem. "And everyone usually winds up congregating around the compound and stuff when this shit happens. Everything'll get straightened out." He paused. "Eventually." Another pause. "I hope."

Hearing Lacey laugh and knowing it's Nicky, that's all kindsa wrong right there. My best friend should not, I repeat should not sound like tumbling dice, the chime of slots, and carousel music, and I should not want to slide my hand under her, his, hair and kiss her. Him.

We gotta fix this shit, before someone else does something questionable. "A'ight, you go to Karen's and get a nametag on. I'll..." I'm drawing a blank on that, 'cos without my magic wand, there really ain't shit I can do, except keep folks from panicking. "I'll try to find the team." I give him a look, like bitch, don't even seduce anyone else in that body. "Meantime, you chill."

"Dude, my only intention is to chill and wait for things to straighten themselves out." Nick shook his head slowly, as if trying to remind himself that this was all actually happening right then and there. "That, and figure out how to keep this damn elephant from following me into the compound."

"How 'bout you don't go to the compound?" I'm not entirely kidding. I'm not sure whether it's Nick or Lacey I'm protecting, but it seems almost like a good idea. "Without a name badge or something," I amend. Who knows how long this thing is gonna last? Nicky'll go nuts if he's stuck in a hut for more than a day.
