~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sound of breaking plates and frightened screams echoed in the house, once lively and bright.
“Get out! Get out, get out, just get out!”
The man watched as the servants scrambled out of the room, obviously fearing the wrath of the person in the room. Beside him, his wife squeezed his hand.
When the servants had all disappeared down the corridor, the man spoke. “Can you really do nothing more for him, Doctor?” Behind them, the doctor could only look at them with regret.
“I’m sorry.”
A loud, but muffled thud against the door made them look up. And faint, almost non-existent soft sounds of a person crying could be heard.
“I can’t walk…I can’t walk anymore…”
Several years later…
He heard someone laughing.
“…ki…ma…”
It sounded so familiar, yet so…almost as if it would break his heart again to hear that sound.
The sound of laughing.
He hated it.
“…i…sama…”
Ever since the day when they found out he could no longer move freely, he had never laughed.
“…zuki…sa…”
That seemed familiar…that name…
“Don’t cry, ne?”
“Kazuki-sama!” His eyes snapped open before turning to focus on his housekeeper and only friend, Jin. The man let out a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness, I thought you would never wake, Kazuki-sama.”
“Well maybe I should just have died in my sleep then.” Kazuki answered bitterly as he pushed himself to sit up, Jin freezing in the act of opening the bedroom’s curtains. “Then maybe my father would finally look at me in the eye.”
“Kazuki-sama…
Slowly pulling the curtains to let the sunlight in, Jin sighed to himself mentally.
It was almost 3 years since the accident.
Ever since that day, Kazuki had changed. He became cold, his mother cried daily and his father avoided him altogether.
It was also the same day that Kazuki’s older brother had walked out of their lives.
But there had been reasons…unsaid reasons that now tore this once close-knitted family apart. But it was not in Jin’s place to reveal why Kazuki’s father would not look at him, why Kazuki had forgotten that he had a brother…and most importantly...
The reason why Kazuki could no longer walk.
The rest of the day went by as usual, Kazuki’s private tutors teaching him, lunch, spending time in the library…it had become a routine so fixed that it seemed impossible to break this chain of events.
Setting down the knife, Jin walked over to the kitchen window and slid it open, feeling the sea breeze brush gently against his skin.
He had missed this place. A lot.
So when Kazuki’s father had approached him, he had not refused.
“Bring Kazuki to your hometown…perhaps the sea will do him good…and help him for the better.”
But obviously, it hadn’t.
It had simply strained ties more between father and son, and with the little contact that Kazuki’s father made, it had simply made Kazuki more resentful.
It was not something an 8-year old should feel.
He wondered in this case, what would Kai say?
“It will work out somehow!”
“Jin-san?” Snapping out of his thoughts, he turned to the maid. “Yes?”
“Kazuki-sama is done with his shower, Jin-san.”
“Understood. Please ready the food to be served to him.” The maid curtsied, and left.
Jin turned back to the window, looking out for a while longer.
“…I suppose…you aren’t here anymore, are you…”
Dinner, as usual, was a silent affair.
And then, the stroll by the sea, also another usual affair.
“Even the sea, loses its beauty in the night.” Kazuki’s voice cut through his thoughts. Jin blinked as he processed what Kazuki said. “And why would it lose its beauty, Kazuki-sama…?”
“Look at the sea, Jin. It’s black. Pitch-black. Just like the color of this sky. All black.”
“But there is beauty to be found even in darkness, Kazuki-sama.” Jin said, memories of a familiar black-haired man coming to mind.
“What, the beauty of not seeing?” Kazuki’s voice was cold, something unusual for an 8 year old. Jin gripped the handle of the chair tightly. “My apologies, Kazuki-sama.”
There was silence for a while as they travelled along the beach. “…don’t apologise, Jin. Maybe there is something that can be seen…even in this pitch-black darkness.”
“The reflection of the sea at night is beautiful, Kazuki-sama.” Jin smiled. “Would you care for a folklore my mother once told me?”
Kazuki half-turned in his wheelchair, and for a while, child-like curiosity burned in those eyes, something that Jin had not seen in a long time. “What story is that, Jin?”
“It is said that in these seas, there lies many mysteries, especially when the night calls. It was said that once upon a time, a beautiful, but sad woman sat here on this rocks, singing songs of her beloved she lost at sea, and prayed that someday, she could meet him here when her time came.”
Jin fell quiet for a while. Kazuki said nothing, so Jin continued. “But it would seem that it was not to be, for one day, when she aged and was old, she sat upon this rocks and wept, that why, even with her songs to the sea, why it would not let her meet her end with him.”
“And suddenly, she heard a voice telling her, “weep not, for your songs have reached him, but he cannot come to you because he is bound to the sea.” And so she looked up for the sound of the voice, but there was no one. “Who, may I ask, is speaking to me? Tell me, how do I meet him again?” for a while the voice did not reply, and she feared that the voice had gone, and then there was wave rushing towards her, leaving her soaked, but in her hands, there was a flute.”
“A flute?” Kazuki frowned. “That makes no sense.”
“There is more, Kazuki-sama.” Jin chuckled at the seeming young master impatience. It was rare that Kazuki acted like this; it meant that there was an improvement. “And so the voice told her, “Give me your voice, and in return, I give you this flute and the gift to hear the voice of the flute. You cannot meet him, but you will hear him. Will you take this gift?”
“Did she take it?” Kazuki spoke up once again.
“What do you think, Kazuki-sama?” Jin smiled down at his protégé. Kazuki let out a small noise.
“Jin-san!” Both of them turned their heads, watching as a servant came running up to them. “My apologies to bother you, but Jin-san, there is some matters that require your urgent attention…”
“It cannot be helped them…shall we return, Kazuki-sama?”
“No…I wish to stay out here a little longer.”
“But Kazuki-sama...” Kazuki turned a frosty glare on the two. “I said I wished to be left here for a while. Am I not allowed that privilege?”
“…very well. Please remain here, and I shall come for you in a while, Kazuki-sama.”
A small nod, and Jin and the servant walked back to the house. As he approached the stairs, Jin turned to the servant. “Watch after the young master, but not too close, understood?”
“Yes, Jin-san.”
Jin looked up to the beach, where a small figure on a wheelchair stared out to the ocean. With yet another sigh for that day, he walked up the stairs and pushed the door open.
It had been a while since he was left alone to do anything.
Listening to the sound of waves, Kazuki felt a sense of relief wash over him.
And let his head empty.
And so he stayed like that for a while…and his ears picked up on something that was not the sound of the wind, and not the waves crashing onto the shore either.
A sharp, but gentle tune…that sounded like it came from a flute…
His eyes widened.
“and in return, I give you this flute and the gift to hear the voice of the flute…”
It couldn’t be…could it?
