5 years, 60 months, and around 1680 days…
Manabu sighed as he crossed another set and wrote down the number. Had it really been 5 years since he joined SCREW? He felt as if he had been with them even longer than that…
A yelp and a string of curses drew his attention back to the real world, and he grinned; Kazuki must have gotten the hot and cold shower taps confused again. Despite living together for almost 3 years now Kazuki still never properly figured the taps out.
3 years. Manabu smiled. Sometimes he wondered how they were still together after so long. Love was very unpredictable indeed, just like how Byo and Rui had ended up together.
He shut his diary and slipped it back to its usual hiding spot. As much as he loved Kazuki there were things he did not want the other man to know; not that he had anything to hide anyway, but…
Everyone was still entitled to some secrets anyway. Slipping out bed, he walked over to the window.
Already the neighborhood was bustling with life. He glanced at the alarm clock on the bedside. 7.a.m.
Few more hours before their manager picked them up to his birthday live later.
Caught up in his thoughts, he failed to hear the squeak of the shower door opening, and he jumped as a pair of strong arms wrapped themselves around his waist.
“Waking you up takes forever, and it’s pretty rare you’re actually awake by yourself this time without making me getting you out of bed.” He smiled softly as he leaned back, giggling as Kazuki nuzzled his neck.
“Is that a complaint I hear?” Manabu teased. “I know your favorite part of the day is to drag me out of bed into the shower.”
“Well you seemed to enjoy it too.” Kazuki retorted. “And it’s only natural that I’ll continue it.” Manabu rolled his eyes, but he was smiling.
“That’s like the kind of excuse Byo would give if he can’t keep his hands off Rui.”
“What to do.” Kazuki shrugged, a smug undertone in his voice. “With lovers such as you two, anyone would have a hard time keeping their hands off you.”
“Why, thank you for the compliment.” Manabu turned his head up slightly to give Kazuki a peck on the lips before nestling back onto Kazuki’s bare chest, the two enjoying the morning view for a while before Kazuki spoke up again.
“Which reminds me, I have something for you.” One arm dropped away from his waist, and Manabu heard the rustle of Kazuki’s hand digging around in his pocket. Manabu tried to turn, but Kazuki tightened his grip around his waist with his other hand.
“Wait, Bu-chan. So impatient.” Manabu huffed slightly as Kazuki laughed. “Ah, found it, here you go.”
Manabu smiled as he took the small box, feeling Kazuki’s arms wrap themselves around his waist again. Manabu studied the box. The box size was slightly bigger than a usual ring box, but smaller than a bracelet box, and the design of the box was nice… “Open it.” Kazuki urged the smaller man.
“Now who’s the impatient one?” Manabu retorted lightly as he slowly opened the box…and stared at it in confusion.
Nestled on the cushion of the box was a coil of red thread. “…Kazuki, this…?”
“Have you heard of what a red thread means?” Manabu shook his head. Kazuki chuckled. “According to traditions, everyone is born with a red string tied around their little finger. This red string will eventually lead them to find their other half…the one that was born for them.”
Kazuki turned the smaller man so that they were now facing each other, and he clasped Manabu’s hands that were holding on to the red thread as the younger man tried to process the meaning to which his boyfriend was telling him.
“I know I’m a bit of a jerk sometimes, making you feel insecure and all…yes, Jin has been telling me everything you confided in him.” Kazuki smiled sheepishly to Manabu’s deer- caught- in- headlights kind of look. “He was pretty annoyed that I wasn’t so thoughtful of your feelings. Gave me a good dressing down, that’s what he did.”
“And although I told him not to say anything…” Manabu mumbled softly to himself, turning his head slightly.
“On the contrary, I think it was a good thing he told me. Jin was right; a relationship needs 2 hands to clap. I keep thinking it’s about me and everything…sometimes I’m failing to see that you too are doing your part in the relationship.” Kazuki took the thread from Manabu’s hands, unraveled it and started winding it around Manabu’s little finger.
“With this…I want to you know, thank you for sticking by me these 3 years or so, even though I’m an ass and everything.” Kazuki wound it one last time and tied a knot, marveling at his handiwork before looking at Manabu again. “And that I’m glad…my red thread, is connected to yours. Although the thread was taken from my favorite scarf, but-”
Kazuki didn’t finish his sentence as Manabu threw his arms around the taller man’s neck and pulled him down for a kiss.
When they finally parted for air, tears were running down Manabu’s face, and he buried his face into Kazuki’s chest. “I can’t believe you pulled off such a cheesy thing…Byo would never let you hear the end of it.”
Kazuki grinned smugly. “Hey, if I managed to nab you of all people it just means I’m better than Byo in the cheesiness department. He’ll be begging me for tips anytime now.”
Manabu thumped Kazuki’s chest as he stifled his laughter. “Idiot. But…thank you.” Kazuki laughed softly, wrapping his arms tighter around the man in his arms, wondering for the thousandth time that he was probably the luckiest man in the world now.
He pressed a kiss to Manabu’s hair.
“Happy birthday, dearest wish."
