Since I've been busy catching up on all the stuff I've missed since Friday , I haven't had the chance to do a proper write up of my birthday weekend. I'm not really feeling a full diatribe, at least on this, right now. When in doubt, Bulleted Lists!

MR is the first 2 hour+ movie ever shown on IMAX screens. Previously IMAX projectors couldn't handle anything longer than 120 minutes (hence the editing of Apollo 13 and Episode II). Just this year they've finally been able to expand their technology to hit the 150 minute mark.
The even better news is IMAX Corp's new DMR (digital re-mastering) technology allows any 35mm movie print to be re-formatted to fit the 15/70 IMAX ratio.
Now I've seen regular 35mm prints blown up to a slight fuzzy distortion on IMAX screens before (Signs and Goldmember). Having watched MR on both a regular print and the huge print, I definitely saw an improvement in the latter.
With this new technology any major release can be shown on an IMAX screen. This is a major strike in the drive to bring back 70mm films and other large formats. Maybe people will once again shoot movies in that ratio (the last one I remember doing it was The Hunt for Red October).
I definitely suggest you wait for July 4 IMAX showing if you can.
