CUMBERLAND -- A dishwasher that tumbled off the back of a pickup truck is to blame for a four-car pileup on Route 295 North on Friday night, the police said.
Just after 7:30 p.m., a man was en route to the Emerald Square Mall in North Attleboro, planning to return a dishwasher he had strapped to the back of his truck, when the boxed appliance broke loose and fell off the truck bed.
Cars swerved to avoid the flying washer, causing four vehicles to smash into one another. One car rolled over in the crash and another was forced off the road onto the grassy median strip.
One person was injured in the incident. A 25-year-old female passenger in the car that rolled was taken to Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket, where she was treated and later released. Police reports indicate that all four drivers, as well as the passenger, were wearing seatbelts.
The driver of the truck told the police he had no knowledge of the washer's disappearance or the accident and continued on to the mall. When he pulled into the parking lot and found the back of his truck empty, he headed to the state police barracks in Lincoln to report that the appliance might be somewhere on the highway.
By that point, Cumberland Police had already responded to the scene and had summoned the state police to bring in portable lights as part of the rescue efforts.
The state police said there were few traffic tie-ups as a result of the accident.
