Need a Hand...

Ok, so I've been dabbling in the land of LJ for some time now, and I wanted to try making my journal look all snazzy and pretty. So I went to the "modify journal" page and just about fell out of my chair when I saw all the coding and html lingo on the customize page. Does anyone out there understand this stuff?? Could anyone give me some ideas and/or tips to making my LJ look prettier? Any thoughts?
