Five Minute Prompts #7

Oct 25, 2009 00:52

I'm not going to deny it. These aren't really five minute prompts. But my phone is out of battery and I'm useless at keeping an eye on the time. So five-ten minutes we'll say. Very Road-centric, because Road is a little bundle of wicked awesome. Words from the Random Word Generator (Plus).

Treehouse

Somewhere among the myriad little bubbles and voids that made up Road's world was a tree. Its roots dug into black earth, its branches stretched into a bruised purple sky and its trunk was marred with vicious little gashes, the whole way up its twisted length. Road slipped her fingers into them, forcing dirt and bark under her nails as she daintily pulled herself upwards. She sang an eerie little tune under her breath as she climbed, focused on the treat ahead.

In a time disproportionate to the tree's height she reached her goal, a dilapidated little shack, held to the tree with rusted pins and her whims, dead leaves curling across its dirty boards. She imagined they were discarded hearts as she skipped across them, delighting in the crackle and crunch under her feet. She was there, her secret place for a secret dream. She hopped into the middle of the room and whirled around, taking in the treasures within.

Each wall was covered with perfect rectangles of paper, the floor carved with her name and his. Giggling to herself she pulled an object out of her pocket and examined it once more, admiring the way the light fell on it as she angled her palm this way and that. Abruptly she tired of it, threw it up in the air with a flighty nonchalance. Her hand moved again, like a hunting hawk.

Hot wax dripped to the floor as she left, the candle still shuddering, point buried deep into the wall. A few loose strands of bloodied silver hair drifted down and down to rest in the grooves.

She jabbed the doll grumpily, prodding at its little button eyes with a sneer.

“Why on earth would I want something like this?” She tossed it to the floor and turned away, dropping onto her bed with a grunt.

“Tyki said you might like it. Don't you?” Her guardian stared across at her with a mixture of amusement and hurt at her actions.

“It's a dirty human doll. Of course I don't like it.”

“Ah. So you don't mind if I take it away...?” He stooped to pick it up, only to stop with a smile as she interjected hurriedly.

“Psh. Leave it.”

When he was gone she rolled over and glared at it, knowing Tyki's teasing intent behind the gift. She decided to ignore it for now. Maybe she could use it for target practice later.

Tyki was unsurprised when he heard her footsteps a few minutes later, then a muffled thud as she dropped onto the bed again. He would be equally unsurprised when he found the Walker miniature under her pillow two days later.

Ninth

Sometimes when she closed her eyes, she could hear him laugh. She remembered little things, little vignettes of time. His fingers over hers as he taught her to play. The way his hair fell at the nape of his neck. The clothes he liked to wear, the way he stood. But she couldn't remember his face.

She couldn't recall when she had started forgetting him. After the initial betrayal? When she had lain for nights on end in her bed, listening to the Earl pace his study, deliver cruel and cutting rants. Once she thought she had heard him cry. She had definitely remembered him then, drawn countless pictures of his insouciant smile, only to slash them, tear up the pieces, burn them in her dancing flames.

So when had the memories faded? If she knew fear, she might possibly have been afraid at the connotations of this forgetfulness. Instead she was just curious. Where had they gone? Why had they gone? She stalked the dreamworld at night, stalked traces of him as he danced through worlds only she knew. Followed her, brother, followed her traitor, followed the Fourteenth. Sometimes she caught a glimpse of a figure, a smile like his, a face in silhouette. But the features were indistinct and she was never sure.
