Those both sound like quite the interesting classes.

Indeed, I do my best. Learning how to keep my classes engaged was quite the fun puzzle when I first started out.

Would you like to register for a class, my dear boy?

When you say ancient civilisations, are you referring to them in a broad sense of the subject, or will it be more focused on a certain core group?

I begin with a broad survey, then attempt to narrow the focus depending on the interests of the group. There is a much greater emphasis on classical civilizations, such as the Greeks, the Romans, and the like, but I am quite fond of the Middle Eastern and African continents, I do admit. The Chinese are also grand and intriguing in their own right, but I fear I would be unable to do it justice in a two-month accelerated class.

I tend to be more intrigued by those in the Middle East, such as Sumaria and Mesopotamia and the like. Though, I do tend to know a bit more about the Greek and Romans. And of those of Europe.

Perhaps in the autumn there could be a class more dedicated to the Chinese. It would be more appropriate time-wise, I would think.

Ah, Mesopotamia, the Cradle of Life. I promise you that the Babylonians and the Assyrians won't be neglected in any way. Their influence on the classics and beyond is too far reaching to ignore.

The Autumn term is an excellent suggestion, my friend, especially in light of September's Autumn Moon Festival. It is just the sort of immersion that would both delight and enlighten my students.

[He looked quite pleased.] I wouldn't mind learning more about those cultures and civilisations.

It'd be a wonderful way to gain attention and interest. I know that I'd certainly be interested.

Wonderful! Are you saying you would like to register for Ancient Civilizations, Mister... ?

That is exactly what I'm saying.

I'm Cana- [Err.] ...Matthew Williams.

I'm delighted to meet you, Matthew. [Professor Layton's first student in Somarium! How exciting!] I'll go ahead and add your name to the roster immediately. Class will begin on May 23rd and occur on every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from half past ten in the morning until noon. You will receive a course syllabus about one week in advance.

How does that sound to you?

[Such a distinction! He'll have to do his very best, then, and make him proud.]

That sounds wonderful to me. I'm already quite eager.

Glad to hear it. I'm sure you will make an excellent student.

Oh, and before we part our ways today, I have one last question for you.

How quick are you at solving puzzles?

Thank you. [There was a brief, polite smile before he stopped to properly think about the question.]

I would say that I can solve them with at least average ability. Though it depends upon the type of puzzle as I'm stronger with some than I am with others.

In that case, Matthew, why don't you give this puzzle I've been working on a go? Consider it a brainteaser to prepare you for the start of class next month.

Take your time. The correct answer will occur to you if you think hard enough.

[And then the professor disappears from the screen, to be replaced with a file he has sent his new student:]
