Auto screencapping with VLC in Mac OS X

This might be somewhat translatable for Windows users, but I can't say for sure since I don't own any PCs. If you will be making a lot of caps in VLC of a show or movie, you might want an alternative to pressing the hotkeys for VLC's Snapshot function over and over again. Hopefully, this will help you out!

Hey thanks for posting this, it works really well and is obviously the way to go to cap fight scenes. I tried it on my windows pc and it works exactly the same way. You do have to start playing the file after the prefs have been switched, so I need to experiment with setting up playlists of the clips I'd like to cap.

Do the files show up in your "Macintosh HD" folder or do you not have access to write directly to it?

Try making a folder on your Desktop called "caps"
In VLC's Preferences -> Video -> Output Modules -> Image File, change the image name prefix like this...
Users/_yourUsername_/Desktop/caps/img

We are now telling VLC to put the caps into the folder "caps" on the Desktop of _yourUsername_ and name the files with img in the front - ex. img00001.png

My username on my Mac is "pibby" so mine would look like this: Users/pibby/Desktop/caps/img

Sorry to post again but I was wondering what type of recording ratio you need to make less caps.. At the moment, I am making like 1000s of caps for just one episode (of greys anatomy)?? Sorry to bother...

Well, assuming the framerate of your video is 25 or 29 fps, if you want it to cap once every second you could put in 25 or 29. For every 2 seconds, try doubling the framerate number and entering 50 or 60, and so on.

Thank you so much for this tut!!! A friend of mine pointed me in your direction for it.

I have a PC laptop with Window's and I it seems that the VLC versions are almost identical, so I didn't have any problems understanding this :D

I put this tut in my mems.

Thank you again!

Just for FYI, incase any other Windows users come across you tut.

According to the VLC help forum, the caps are supposed to be saved in the "My Pictures" file by default, but for me, the caps are going directly to the VideoLAN>VLC file in Program Files.

Everything else for setting the preferences are practically identical.
