taste

Here's a funny thing: I can taste salt. All the time. It started last Monday and it won't stop. I know that unusual tastes can be a sign of pregnancy, but I really am not pregnant.

I couldn't tell if it was my sense of taste or my saliva (hope this isn't too disgusting to read) that was going wrong. After a not very scientific (but very fun) experiment with Matt, I'm fairly sure that my mouth does not taste of salt to the outside world. It's just me. I've become hypersensitive to salt.

Doing the inevitable, and searching for similar cases on the internet, I find that there are people out there who've been tasting mostly salt for YEARS, without their doctors being able to fix it. I don't want that.

I can't drink green tea anymore, because the salt overwhelms the bitterness.

The only thing I've eaten in the last ten days that didn't taste of salt was a sugar-free mint.

I'm wondering if it's been caused by one of the following:

1. Hormone imbalance. If pregnant women can experience weird tastes then that suggests taste can be affected by hormone changes. I had the worst bout of PMS of my life just before this salt thing started. Could that be a factor?

2. Migraine. Apparently there have been cases where migraines have been implicated in weird tastes. I haven't had much of an appetite for the last ten days either, which is another sign of migraine (although I bet if everything you ate tasted of salt you'd probably lose your appetite too).

3. Zinc deficiency. Lack of zinc in the diet can mess with your appetite and sense of taste. Zinc deficiency has been implicated in anorexia nervosa -- the lack of zinc starts the pattern of not wanting to eat/not enjoying food, and then the psychological problems (body dysmorphia, twisted relationship between control over food and control over self and pleasure in "beating" food by not eating it, etc) get going.

If it's 1 or 2 then I should get better all on my own, shouldn't I? I start ovulating at the weekend, which I'm hoping would correct the hormone problem, if there is one. And migraines can't last forever. If it's the 3rd one then I suppose I could take zinc supplements.

I'm going to wait until next week, and visit the doctor if it's still going on.

I was never massively keen on the taste of salt in the first place.
