Dirty nappies and wipes go into mesh bag in nappy bin (no need to rinse or soak them). When bin is full (approx every 3 days), put mesh bag and contents into washing machine. Cold rinse or cold pre-wash, depending on machine. Wash at 60C (but can do 40C once baby is 6 months old) with normal amount of Bold 2-in-1. Extra rinse at the end. Hang nappies out to dry. (Outers are dry within 24 hours. All the stuffing bits and bamboo night nappies take a few days, and have to go on the radiators for an hour or two at the end when it's cold/damp out. Much better to hang them outside on the line, but we don't have that option here. Stuff nappies, and start all over again!
Stains will fade massively in sunlight, if stains bother you. :-)
We've found that we need to have enough nappies to last 6 days, so there's always 3 days'-worth dry and ready to use, and 3 days'-worth hanging up.
Re poo. Breastfed newborn poo can be left on the nappies and will wash out in the machine easily. Once they start on solids (or if they're on formula) you have to scrape the poo into the loo (this is not pleasant but only takes a minute). River's poos are mostly solid these days, unless she's teething badly, so the poo just drops off easily into the toilet.
You can get newborn nappies that are very small. You can buy "fitted" nappies that come in different sizes. Or you can buy "birth-to-potty" nappies that you adjust with buttons to fit baby from approx 8.5lb to 35lb.
As you can tell, I think they're great. If you ever have any questions about them, just ask!

Some shops do trial schemes so you can have a go for a tenner. Eg. http://www.fill-your-pants.com/cloth-nappy-trial.html
And there's a thriving secondhand market. Eg. http://www.clothnappytree.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=59
