Yesterday I made a hat. It's for my historian friend, to go with the
scarf I made for her last year.
I followed
Rachel Iufer's pattern, with a few changes -- 98 stitches cast on instead of 80, 8 stitches cast off instead of 12, 6 inches of hat before beginning the decreases, decreasing by knitting two together six times in every round -- because when I followed her pattern exactly I ended up with a tiny little hat fit only for a baby with a slightly pointy head. I should've checked gauge before starting, I suppose.
I particularly like the decreases, because they do a nifty little spiral on the top of the hat:
I also just really like the hat itself. The colour changes in the yarn worked really well with the different bits of the hat. And to decorate the (purely ornamental) flap I used an old belt buckle that I found in my grandmother's button box. I want to keep it!
The best thing about this project is that I've finally learnt how to use double-pointed needles. At last! Hats and socks no longer scare me!
