Apocalypse is En Sabah Nur, an ancient Egyptian who was the first mutant. He is a Darwinian figure, believing in survival of the fittest. He recruited four horsemen, which included Angel (Warren Worthington) as Death. This is how Angel acquired metallic wings and became known as Archangel.

At the dawn of the new millennium, Apocalypse recruited the Twelve, a dozen powerful mutants who would enable him to remake the world in his image (that's the short version). Cyclops seemingly sacrificed himself to defeat Apocalyse but had actually merged with Apocalypse, absorbing some of the villain's darkness (which some theorize led Cyclops to cheat on Jean Grey with Emma Frost).

In the Age of Apocalypse story, Charles Xavier's son Legion went back in time, intending to kill the young Magneto, but instead killing Xavier. Magneto was moved by Xavier's death to form the X-Men. Without Xavier's opposition, Apocalypse took over the world. The costume he wears here is from that alternate future storyline.

To me, those are the best parts of the superhero movies.. you or Jason end up telling me backstories.
