Facebook Photo Security Activism

Apr 26, 2008 20:16

Do you value your privacy on Facebook? Did you know that your profile security settings are independent of your photo album settings? That means your pictures can be entirely public even if your profile is not--all someone needs is a link to ONE of your photos (they can then browse the rest of the album). I find a common way this happens is if I get a news-feed item that says "so-and-so commented on some stranger's photo". I can not only view my friend's comment on that photo, but the rest of the album as well. You can fix this by setting all your albums to "friends only" but you need to edit it through the application settings, not through your profile. Please take the time to make sure that your photos are set to the security level you desire.

I've sent the following message to a couple of people:

Hi {user},

I'm a friend of {mutual friend}'s and I just wanted you to know that your photo album security is set to "Everyone" or "Friends of friends". I know this because I recently followed a link to one of your albums that {mutual friend} had commented on. What many people don't realize is that I then have access to the rest of the album, regardless of whether a friend of mine has commented on a photo or is tagged in any of them.

Also, if your album security is set to "Everyone" it means that the link can be passed along to anyone, even people without Facebook accounts, and is essentially public media on the internet.

If this was your intention, then sorry for the inconvenience.
