I thought this could be heaven or this could be hell. She lit up a candle and she showed me the way.

Sally wasn't sure what she had been expecting when she let the DI, DI Drake, lead her across the street to what seemed like the only lit building on the block. It looked like a restaurant, maybe a pub, and it wasn't until they drew closer that Sally could make out the lettering on the side, Luigi's ( Read more... )

Gene was, as usual, presiding over his unofficial "court" from his smaller table in the corner. He noticed Alex and the girl come in, but paid no attention to them, appearing to be quite thoroughly absorbed by his Scotch and Luigi's latest culinary endeavour - some sort of fish and chips pie, which was marginally less abhorrent than the steak and chips pizza.

"Choose anything you want," Alex said, pouring a rather generous helping of wine into the glass in front of Sally before serving herself. "Though I would advise to avoid the steak and chips pizza. It's about a good as it sounds, from what I hear."

Alex was in fact hankering for something more of the pasta variety; probably something with lots of cheese, and crammed with enough carbohydrates to make up for not having eaten most of the day. Her days tended to be fueled with caffeine and alcohol; a far cry from her days back home, when three round meals had fallen at the top of important things like sleep and making sure Molly brushed her teeth.

Settling into the stool, Alex sipped at her wine and shot a glance between Sally and where Gene sat in the corner. "I'm assuming you haven't been here before?"
