Mediocre Music?

If you don't like a song on the first listen, but like it after multiple listens (say, three), does that mean the song is inherently mediocre*, but you like it just because it's familiar after all that? How about for whole albums?

* Yes, musical tastes are subjective. Just play along. :)

Hmmm. I don't know. It usually takes more than three listens for me to like a song that I didn't care for at first.

Do you think that reveals more about the song or the listener?

Here's a corollary to what I'm thinking about. I read an article a while back about a woman who was trying to train herself to appreciate foods she didn't like (the reason was, she wanted to become a professional food critic). She said something along the lines of forcing herself to eat a food ten times, and that seemed to do the trick.

What I'm wondering is, would the same thing work for songs one doesn't like?

I think it could work for music that was of high quality. Some might say that you can't judge the quality of music because it's all based on taste, but I can refute that with one phrase: She Bangs by William Hung.

Eating rotten food ten times probably wouldn't make you appreciate it, either.
