While Heather is a very strong woman, this chapter shows her vulnerable and human side.  I hope you find this portrayal to be realistic and true to her character.

I completely agree! My brother was deployed in the first Iraq war. I saw how hard it was on our entire family, including his wife and very small children. He would send occasional videos home. I’ll never forget his 1 year old daughter standing with her nose pressed to the TV saying “da da”. It was heartbreaking. (Fortunately, he came home safe and sound.)

That is heartbreaking; it's so hard for families. I'm glad your brother came home safe and sound. :)

All I’ll say is no…or at least not yet. (Oops! Did I give something away?)

As I’ve said before, in the right circumstances, I thought they could be good friends. There’s almost a “ying and yang” about them. Beck helps Jake grow up, while Jake helps Beck loosen up.

I agree; I think they could be very good friends. And you're right - Jake does help Beck loosen up (out of self-preservation if nothing else. ;D )

I’ll let you and the other readers judge whether it is realistic enough or too rushed.

I think you did a good job of it. I thought it was quite realistic and pretty well paced.

I may be able to post the next chapter as early as tonight.
