...though how many days a 30-day meme will take me, who knows. Anyway, off we go.
Day 1 - Your Favourite Song
The idea of a favorite song seems almost inherently adolescent to me, if only because you'd have to know so few songs for any honest consideration of favorites to yield a single, satisfyingly unambiguous answer.
To wit: I haven't had a favorite song since I was 12, when I sought from music precisely what Mario demands from Super Stars: raw, exhilarating invincibility.
…I'll never forget the first time I heard "Zero" on the radio. My ears must have physically widened, like a slow-motion aural jawdrop. The Smashing Pumpkins were the pop-metal darlings of my microgeneration's bleeding hearts; they suited me uncannily. In retrospect, the very act of getting Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness may have given me too much to love to pick a singular favorite song again.
NB: I've been leery of music videos, ironically, ever since seeing the "1979" video and thinking: "not only is this dumb, but I will think of this dumb video whenever I hear this song." My ability to like the song was circumscribed, in a sense. As such, this is actually the first time I've seen ANY of the video for "Zero".
I, uh, don't think I'll finish it.
