It's not quite as dramatic -- actually, I'd call it definitively flaccid, which is funny considering the politics involved -- but doesn't this remind you of scenes from the desegregating south? What is wrong with these people?

And yes, we have a long and strong cracker tradition. I'm sure such people exist in the UK and continental Europe, but they don't seem to be anywhere near as significant a cultural force. Why hasn't fundamentalist Christianity made as strong an impact in Europe? That, and the fact that European Social Democracies don't seem anywhere near as wracked by violent crime as the US, are mysteries to me. (Maybe I'm wrong on that one? I hear violent crime is on the rise in the UK. And of course, the various immigrant balkans cultivated throughout Western and Northern Europe must be bad.)

people say that violent crime is on the up, i can't say i've noticed! there's definitely more anti-semitism recently, i've started hiding my magen david on public transport, something i wouldn't need to do if i was in new york. perhaps the fact that so many people own guns in the US has something to do with the amount of crime there? not to get all michael moore about it, or anything..
