I was doing this blog entry over at my bookstore, offline-because I didn’t get enough time Saturday morning to do so before I had to get ready to work. After about a week of no internet, I have quite a bit to catch up on. At least I didn’t have too much to sort through at my inbox page.
Besides having no internet for that particular week, I also had been feeling sick. I wasn’t feeling very bad two Saturdays ago (during my FIRST EVER sister group meetup to the St. Mary’s Boardgamers-will get more into that in a bit woot), but man the rest of those 5 days in following-I’m so glad I did not have to work, due to the winter hours I have until all the cold weather passes. Really, because I usually have to walk around the Marketplace area to the very front of the building to use the women’s room. Having to do that while still sick over at the store would have sucked big time. The back doors are locked with the alarm set off, due to the worry of shoplifters or whatever. They want to have their paranoid eyes on everyone who enters and it has to be from the front.
I don’t really associate myself with those people, or the auction house (their prices for books are higher than what I sell them for) so I just let them be. I’m my own boss and prefer it that way as long as possible. There’s also another reason why I don’t partner up with those people, because they have intentionally lied once. Some summers back, some of the women who run the Main Building kept telling some of our customers that we were going to close down and go out of business... *Sigh* A thing of the past, but people are people.
Anyway, I’m all better now, so yaaaay. Booo, HISSSS to that sickness! Gross, gross, gross. Two words: stomach virus. Partially my fault, because of my bonehead decision to eat a big piece of a very rich chocolate cake my mom bought that was on sale. I believe that triggered it.
Sooo, aside from having to take a few much needed breaks in between the first meetup at the store, it turned out great! There were five other people who went, aside from Mom and myself. A friend of mostly my dad’s I’m still getting to know, Ruby, she showed up. She brought her daughter Brianna and they had a good time. Brianna bought some cook book magazines at some point, because she enjoys cooking. Ruby, like myself, is an introvert. Also, we recently relate a little in doing what we can to balance socializing with others and taking time for just ourselves.
I know going to meetups has been a big help for me (aside from the babysitting at my one of my dad’s meeting places), so I’m sure it will be a big help for her.
Dave, one of the newer members of the St. Mary’s group came and brought his friend Kristy over with him. What we call Classic Rich (now that there is another Rich who recently started coming over to the comic book cafe place in Leonardtown) also came and had a good time. We split into two groups at first, then came together and played a few rounds of this silly card game I bought around Christmas time called Chaos. Everyone lol’d. We also played through and had fun with a round of the trivia game, Ripley’s Believe it or Not.
I was a moderator for one of the two groups, in teaching both Dave and Kristy Forbidden Island. I’ve played it enough times to get the hang of it. I need to try out a different role next time. With each color piece, there are certain roles. For two player I often went with red, the Engineer (shoring up two tiles adjacent to the player per one turn). For three to four I usually picked Explorer, the green piece. As the Explorer I get to optionally move and/or shore up one piece of the island per action. Three is the limit in this game. See previous entries that have the Forbidden Island tag to learn more. Or better yet, check out the video I posted not too long ago.
I’m looking forward to next Saturday’s meetup! ^_^ I’m sure Ruby and Brianna will be coming over again. Everyone else, I’ll just have to wait and see, in which I don’t mind, not in the slightest.
Last meetup was last night. For the first time in Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill, I got to be the traitor! And it was so fun, especially with two new people who showed up. Out of the 50 different scenarios, the Haunt was vampire themed. I was so close to having one of the others become a traitor with me! So close, and then we ran out of time. It was almost time to get going by then. Better luck next time, lol.
I have still more stuff to say, so that’ll likely go under a cut...
In finishing this entry up, I’ve got to say that I’ve had a really cool day over at the store. There was this guy who came in and said he was into stuff like strategic games, abstract kinds of games, and co-op quest games. I found out we had quite a bit of the same interests on games and shared some interest on Japanese culture. (I told him the game Okami would be his cup of tea, and he does in fact play video games.) So, I told him about the sister group getting together by next Saturday. Cam (short for Cameron) said he was going to check his schedule. I told him about Meetup.com too. We both embrace creativity, and we just talked about gaming stories for a while! Also he shared some funny stories about the people in his life.
I believe he’ll be a very fun addition to the meetups! I told him the story about my mom, Allan, and myself playing Tiki Mountain with Pierce, the organizer from Deale. Cam found that to be hysterical, while he recalled hearing about the game before. Some of the games he’s mentioned to me that he’s played are Shadows of Camelot, Chess, Killer Bunnies, and Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill. Apples to Apples too, since I mentioned Bubble Talk to him, but he hasn’t played Bubble Talk yet.
I wonder if Cam is into anime. He didn’t stay long enough for me to talk about that today, so maybe the next time I see him, I’ll bring up that subject.
He bought 8 paperbacks from me (one on the game Bridge and some P.D. James), and sometime soon after that, Dad, Ruby, and Brianna came over. We talked and laughed and I found out another thing I have in common with Ruby; we both self taught ourselves on how to play the keyboard. She’s a very nice and overall fun person. Oh, and she mentioned she saw the cute looking movie called Gnomeo and Juliet. She said it was well done. It really does look funny and cute from what I saw from the trailer.
When I got back home from work, my mom bought a few DVDs from Blockbuster and one of them is this total LOL-fest called Dinner for Schmucks. Steve Carrell was so great in that, and the other lead. I keep forgetting his name. Also, Jeff Dunham was in it! My family and I find him hilarious, and have three Dunham DVDs, including the Very Special Christmas Special one.
Anyway, Dinner for Schmucks was about this business guy wanting a promotion and to do that, he had to find a not so bright person and invite him to dinner, like all the other folks at his job so they could make fun of them. I don't really want to spoil and I'm short on time. I just recommend at least renting it.
That's one of my new favorite movies, next to Toy Story 3. Yes, I finally, finally got to see that.
