More Joy

So I started having a sort of email conversation with Mel about this joy thing in conjunction with talking about actors and how difficult they find it to act the expression "laughter". It made me think again that for some reason we as adults have a hard time feeling positive emotions. I mean, how many complaints have you heard since you woke up this morning, from your own lips or the lips of others? How many sad and blue people have you run into so far today? I work in an office, so I've seen quite a few. We're really quick to sigh and say "Is it 5:00 yet?" but you don't usually hear things like "I am so psyched to be here today!"

So why are people so blah or negative about life? I mean, we're here for a really long time. My grandmother lived to be almost 92 and my grandma is alive and kicking at 83. If genetics are an indicator, I'm going to be here for a while. I might only be done just over a third of my life. I certainly haven't reached the halfway point yet. That's a loooooooong time. And that's a long time to be depressed, unsatisfied, or generally negative about things. I don't like the idea that I'm only allowed to spend the first 15-20 years of my life being a total goofball. I see people around me who look like they're being rained on every day. But why? Granted, I have gone through times where I couldn't help but be sad for whatever circumstantial or chemical reasons. But underneath it all I always knew I was a happy person.

Which brings me around to my other curious thought....

So an entire profession exist to help people deal with negative emotions: psychology. If you're really badly sad you can go to a professional for help. But we don't have anything even remotely equivalent for happy people. Granted, one might argue that happy people don't need help. But wouldn't it be cool if you could get a bunch of happy people together in one big joyful conglomerate of happiness??? Then they could go around spreading happiness. Actually, I saw a book like that "The Pig of Happiness" that was truly awesome.

Anyhow, I think it's high time the happy people of the world unite! We could take over the world, and oh my gosh it would be a very cool place to be! And SpongeBob would lead us all! Woot!

happy, me, life, i am a nerd
