Oh my gosh, the Kolkata Knight Riders actually won yesterday! I couldn't believe it. Obviously I can't go watching cricket at work, and even if I could I'm not willing to pay the kind of money that it costs to watch just one game, but I did keep peeking in on the score via Yahoo! Cricket. And it was looking bad all around from the beginning. Not unusual for the KKR. I cringed and muttered a few choice comments to my computer screen, glared at the KKR emblem I've downloaded to serve as my desktop wallpaper, then got back to work. But something must have happened right after lunch because when I went back the game was over ... and lo and behold ... KKR WON! And instantly I kicked myself for not having watched the scrolling score as the game was going on. That'll teach me. So this morning, about ten minutes ago, I zipped over to the KKR website to see if SRK had posted any reaction to the win on his blog. He hasn't. However, the KKR merchandise store is up and running! I already have my t-shirt from eBay (and judging from the prices on the website I got a fantastic deal) ... and imagine my surprise when I saw that they have for sale KKR SOCKS!!!! No. Way. And only 200 rupees too (which is about $4). So of course I desperately want some now. And seeing as I bought myself a new iPod last night and also allowed myself a pity purchase yesterday when I was feeling thora duhki (I bought the movie Kyon Ki... from someone on eBay, but it was only $6 total, so perfect for a pity purchase) KKR socks are not on the menu until my next paycheck. But just knowing they exist makes me so happy. Mmm... Socks.
So yes, I'm feeling a little Pandora-ish this morning after my Murphy's Law day yesterday. I tell ya, one of these days I am going to write a novel that it my own personal retelling of the Pandora myth. There is so much more to it than the story that people know. I've explained this to several people irl already, but the thing that fascinates me about the myth in its original form is that Hope is not a good thing. Hope is the final disaster that is inflicted on the human race. Hope is what ultimately makes them all miserable. Because you can cope with the ills of life if you just sigh and accept that that's the way things are, but if you have hope that things will get better ... zindagi dard hai, life is pain. It would make a fantastic novel. Too bad I only really like to write romance novels, and all romance novels have happy endings. No happy ending? It's not a romance. Or as the other saying goes, "if it's not happy, it's not the end". As far as my own life goes, I chose to agree with the comment that Genta made to me last night as we were in painting class (and I paraphrase here): Everything balances out in the end. If your life has been bad so far it's because something really great is coming and it will be equally as wonderful going forward. Today I choose to believe that. At the very least it means that our experiences of pain can only increase our capacity for joy. And if 35 years of bad luck and disappointment give way to 35 years of good fortune and joy ... *counts* ... either I'm going to live a very long life or change is coming soon!
Now if only my right shin would heal properly so that it doesn't hurt when I put weight on it in the morning.... Another great thing that someone said to me recently.... On Sunday, upon seeing my red, swollen, nasty shin Rachel said, "Have fun with your skin cancer!" =P
