Overheard in the Annex

* Little boy, about 6, pointing to a jagged pile of ice chunks on the curb: "Mom, stop! I want to build a fire over the ice!"
* Mother: "I don't think that's going to work."
* Boy, brandishing stick: "That's why I have this . . . super-pecker! I'll peck it down!"
* Me, inside my head: "Son, trust me, there are better things to do with one's super-pecker than melt the icy streets."
