Did I tell you that I had a jager bomb? I did. A couple months ago. I walked into a bar in Washington D.C, pulled up a stool and sat down.
The bartender asked, "What can I get you?"
I replied, "A Jager bomb."
Everyone within earshot laughed. I've felt silly often enough in my life that I've kind of gotten used to it.
After pausing for effect, the bartender said, "Are you sure you want a jager bomb?"
I said, "Yea. I've never had one before."
The bartender said, "Okay, but I'm going to need to see some I.D."
I scrunched my eyebrows and said, "Why?"
The bartender replied, "Because only eighteen-year-olds drink jager bombs."
We exchanged smiles.
He put the Red Bull in the shaker with some ice, poured it into a tumbler, then poured me a shot of jagermeister. When you have a jager bomb, you have to drop the shot glass into the other glass. I almost poured the small glass into the large glass but hesitated because, thought I, if that's the game then why didn't the bartender just pour the shot into the tumbler. I still haven't exactly got that part figured out even yet. I guess dropping the shot glass into the tumbler adds some ceremony to the whole experience.
And that's what I did.
Then I commenced to drinking. So what do I think? Well, it wasn't vile or anything but it's kind of a waste of jagermeister. Also, probably because people are stupid, jager bombs are really expensive.
So, why did I do this? Well... I had met a salesman, a defense contractor the night before and he told me that a jager bomb is really great; a terrific pick-me-up and I needed to try one. They had no Red Bull at the hotel restaurant so I couldn't have one there. I told him that I'd try one at my next opportunity. I might add that he was older than I so I wonder what kind of bars he usually hangs out in...
And America really is the land of mixed drinks. Every time I go there, there's some new thing; some new flavor-of-the month. Sometimes I have fun mixing cocktails for my European friends. Maybe we'll even do jager bombs one night.
As for me, I'll stick to Guinness.
