Stuff I did today

Dec 15, 2007 17:55

First, I woke up.  Then I peed.  Then I had espresso.  Then I put some clothes on and went outside.  It was -3 Celsius.  Thats about buttfriggincold Farenheit.  I drove awhile.  My car is showing its age a little.  I don't like how the engine vibrates when its cold.

I went to get a duck.  I had an appointment with my connection between 9 and 11; her place.  My connection is a friend of the MSU.  I don't know who the kingpin duck dealer is, but I'm told that the duck came from the Gers.  I named him Charles on sight.  Charles Duckworth Duckington.  Chuck for short.  Chuck the duck.  Chuck sticks his tongue out.

Actually, I didn't get a whole duck.  He's missing his feathers and his inner workings that make him quack and walk and perform complex calculations.  On the upside, he was very well behaved on the way home.  He has a beak and some eyes and a brain and feet but I'm not interested in those parts really.  I'm mostly interested in his muscle tissue and his engorged liver which came separately vacuum-packed.  Even French duck farmers have modernized to a point.

This duck was raised via human intervention.  He was spoiled against his will.  He was force-fed cereal for most of his adult life so that he would get fat and juicy and his liver would get huge and buttery and delicious.  I suppose that one could go to jail in the U.S. for raising this duck the way this duck was raised.  Viva la freedom!

I made two stops on the way home.  The first was a supermarket where I bought eggplant, garlic, onions, tomatoes, and zucchini.  The second was my second favorite bakery; hot baguettes!

In between the two stops, I set the GPS for 'shortest route' mode.  That's the last time I do that in the country.  The should-be-twenty-minute trip home took me about an hour and I came to regret having gotten rid of my 4x4.  On the upside, I scoped out some prime trail for one of my future mountain bike rides and I didn't do any damage (that I'm aware of) to my car.  Several times the GPS told me to turn right or left onto roads that don't exist and don't look like they could have possibly existed since Napolean rode down them.  I mean Napolean Bonaparte.  Once I got back on the pavement I realized that I'd been doing isometric exercises almost non-stop since I'd left the pavement.  My limbs had been tensed up for an hour and I hadn't realized it.  I know how Abalone feel.

when I got home, Chuck went into the freezer.  Chuck's liver went into the fridge.  The veggies went on the kitchen counter and if the GPS wasn't so expensive, it would likely have gone down the toilet.  Thursday or Friday, after I've taken my final exams, Chuck's liver will, with a little luck and a ton of effort, become 'home made' foie gras.  Foie Gras a la phrench_phried.  Yay me!  Chuck will likely become Confit de Canard in four lovely little canning jars, perhaps with some help from my wife's friend, the duck connection.  For some reason, she seems to like to help people make confit de canard.  Who am I to refuse?

Months down the road, the confit de canard formerly known as Chuck will probably become Cassoulet.  It's a long process for beans.

After about an hour of not studying, I made Ratatouille.  About half way into the making Ratatouille process we had lunch.  Somewhere in there I remembered that we're going over to a friend's house for dinner tonight.  So, polliwogs and baby sitter get home made ratatouille a la phrench_phried for dinner.  I get... mystery food.

fun, food, friends
