Body parts

When I was in Reno I met a guy who's a little younger than me and has a prosthetic leg. His other leg looks like a bird cage. The leg he has left has a steel wire frame encasing his whole lower leg and the wires at the top penetrate into his knee; to support the bone I suppose. In other words, his knee looks like a bicycle hub, complete with spokes. Talk about empathy. I could hardly bear to talk to him because I know that he could so very easily be me or I could so easily be him. Then I thought (and I'm sure he has too) that he has two beautiful children, a wife who seems crazy about him, and, most of all, his life.

And he wants to stay in the Army. It sounds like they've changed the rules to allow amputees to continue in their military service as long as they can perform their duties. I don't know what I think of that. I guess that's cool. I can imagine a day when Darth Vader doesn't seem so far-fetched. Anyway, he's probably a better soldier than I was, it's hard to say because I'm not there, but I'm pretty sure that if I had given a limb for my country, I'd have stopped there.

His wife has been trying hard to get him tickets to see Jimmy Buffett. I'm thinking that if the Buffett man knew, he'd probably give them backstage passes. I wish I had connections...
